Default 2002 Golf GT TDi 150 review

Whilst my Volvo S80 is in the dealer for a faulty valve within the auto box they've given me a Golf GT TDi 1.9 150 as a loan car.

On first viewing I thought it looked ok, a bit bland but ok. The interior is typically german in design, i.e. bland but very functional. My only little gripe is that the climate control buttons are right at the bottom of the centre console and the gearstick gets in the way. Rear space is very cramped as you'd expect, hence the kiddies don't like it at all. I do like the nice blue and red lights emmiting from the controls and clocks however.

Driving it - it does pull very well being the 150ps, but the front lifts and dives on acceleration and braking respectively, and the suspension feels to pitch and roll too much for my liking, but that could be because I'm used to the Astra Coupe which handles like a dream. The gearchange is sweet as a nut however and much better than the notchy Vx ones. The engine seemed to be very revvy as well and there was massive (and I do mean massive) turbo lag. The VX CDTi's are more petrol like to drive which is what I really like, but this VAG unit is deffo a diesel by no mistake. It's noisy and you soon find yourself changing up and down a lot in traffic.

Verdict - would I buy one? Not a chance! I know it's a 2002 model and VW have made a lot of improvements since, but the car is simply too bland and the drive is hard work.

To be honest the build quality is as I expected, very good. But it's simply bland.

VW has benefited greatly from tremendous brand loyalty, particularly with the Golf and the Golf GTI. Has been so since the first GTI appeared in the late 70's. In reality, VW are no better these days than the competition. Overrated and overpriced. But for some people, the badge and its perceived kudos is what matters.

    Agree with that.

The MK 1 Golf GTi was a fantastic car - the first and best 'hot hatch'.

Bro in law used to have one and it was good. Maybe a bit of rose coloured glasses though now....

I worked for them in the early 80's as the MK2 Golf was launched, some of the cars were really nice motors, my favorite at the time was the 5 cylinder VW Santana GX5, basically an upmarket booted Passat/Audi 80, but I still watched plenty of the cars return for major engine work, especially Polo's that needed new crankshaft shells.

As you know my Superb is virtually a VW, I have the 130 PDi engine, it smokes a lot, it's nimble and good on fuel, the suspension is absolutely awful both in design and handling, though it does ride really nice on roads that other cars would jolt you on.

Quite so. I knew somebody who had a MK1 and from the passenger seat, I could see that the handling was scaaaaaaary, especially in the wet. But so eager and so much fun. A definite trend-setter.

And noticeably quicker than the current model! Top Gear did a feature racing a MK1 GTI against a brand new one, and the oldie won by a very good margin!

I was really surprised at how little space there was in the rear. I wasn't expecting it to be like a Signum back there but even so it's tiny.

They used to torque steer rotten back then, only a 1.8 engine as well, Scirrocco used to do it as well.
