Red face New digi camera advice please

Well after much use and many thousands of photos our £40 tesco 5m pixel special has started playing up and with new addition on the way I've been TOLD to get something more reliable!!

So looking for advice really. Would love to go digi SLR as we have a Canon with a few lenses/filters etc, but I guess the new bodies and old lenses are not compatible and the price is a little out of the range at the minute so looking for digi compact jobbie. I the sky is the limit with questions like this but looking for a sensible price if that makes sense.

    Much appreciated.

Andy (and the boss looking over my shoulder)

I've got the older Fuji F30 and I think its great, battery lasts forever and pics are good. Has a setting which takes two pics at the same time 1 with flash and 1 without.

Newer one has Face Detection and 8MP:

I've got a 350D and a couple of guys have got the later version which is the 400D.

My old Canon EOS lenses work on the camera. The telephoto which is a Sigma will only work at the widest aperture though. Auto focus is fine.

My lenses are about 12 years old.

If money is tight look on eBay for a s/h one, any of the premium brands like Canon,Fuji,Panasonic,Konica Minolta etc will be better s/h than £80 of interpolated crap.

Most, if not all, Canon EF lenses will fit on a Canon digital SLR.

Price-wise the 350D and 400D are now quite reasonable when you consider the advantages and quality benefits over compacts.

Have a look at places like LCE and T4Camera's as they often offer them at prices better than you'll get on sh*teBay.

I would highly recommend the Fuji compacts and the likes of the S7000 etc.

You can get and s7000 or s9500 from ebay cheap as chips and the pics are stunning.

something like the above is spot on

If you want the Benefits of an SLR, it might be worth waiting that little bit longer and get one!! A 400D is an Ideal camera for anyone, and it can use any EF Canon Fit Lens, there are third party adaptors to allow you to use the Older Canon FD Mount as well.

If you want a Compact then I find the Casio are Quite Good - all depends how much you want to spend!! But as BlueRob said, dpreview is a Good website to hunt around on!

Personally I'd wait and go for the DSLR!! I think they are Superb, and oddly enough Just bought a Canon Film Camera haha!

Lots of pros and cons of SLR and compacts. I've got a Canon 400D with various lenses and accessories and the quality of the shots is far in excess of anything you'll get from even the best compact. However, sometimes I see my mates out and about with their credit card sized cameras and wish I didn't have to drag a huge camera bag around with me...

For general everyday photography, I'd always go with an SLR for one single reason: Flashgun. Even the cheapest most basic flashgun can be angled upwards and bouncing a flash off the ceiling can work wonders with any shot of a house party, pet curled up on the sofa, set of wheels to sell on ebay etc...

If you do decide to go for an SLR, you won't be disappointed with the 400D.

If you have your eye on anything, stick a model number up on here and I (or someone else no doubt) will take a look for you.
