    Default Settle an Argument!

Hi guys, got a question regarding the CDTI 1.9 engine.

Basically I work for Arnold Clark (though not a vauxhall branch, a fiat/citroen 1) and 1 of the Fiat mechanics reckons that the 120bhp 1.9 cdti used in the mk5 astra is an 8valve engine, while the 150bhp version is a 16v.

whereas I reckon that in the astra BOTH the 120bhp engine and the 150bhp engine are 16valve

pretty sure that in the Vectra the 120bhp version is an 8valve and the 150bhp is a 16valve, BUT NOT the astra as both its 1.9s are 16v

anyone care to give a definitive answer.

    p.s. I've searched google and I can find BOTH 1.9 CDTI 8 valve 120bhp astras AND 1.9 CDTI 16valve 120 bhp astras.

Yeah i found out the same thing. I had an 1.6 8v 2003 Astra and the engine was fine once they fixed it!

RAC guy said they are really good engines, although mine was a petrol

thats cos you've got a vectra, as I just stated above, I know the 120bhp 1.9 in the vectras is an 8valve engine, was asking if the 120bhp engine in the astra is also an 8valve as I have found loads of links telling me the 120bhp 1.9 in the astra is a 16valve.

Well as he is a Fiat mechanic he should know as the engines are old Fiat units

AFAIK there are 120 Astra's with both 16 and 8 valves. The 150's are the same engines with different maps.........i think

EDIT: Rich, i think the 1.7 CDTi is the 100bhp engine

the 100bhp cdti is the 1.7 mate.

Caterman: whats the reasoning behind them having both an 8v and a 16v 120bhp 1.9 in the astra, seems a bit pointless to me, surely it'd make more sense to have 1 or the other, and my Fiat mechanic who the arguement is with reckons that there isnt a 1.9 cdti 16v 120bhp because if it were it'd be a detuned 16v 150bhp engine and he reckons this wouldnt happen because detuning an engine puts it under stress.

The first Mk5 Astras were indeed detuned 16v 150bhp units. This may have been done with the theory of selling them cheaper, but making a cost saving as only one engine was needed instead of two, thereby simplyfing the suppply chain and assembly line. Or perhaps the assembly line wasnt equipped to fit the 120 8v engine? The Astra 888 CDTis were originally 120 units tuned to 160bhp and 200bhp (two bhps on the sport switch). After approx a year GM decided to put the 8v unit in instead.
