    Default Here`s a question

I don`t know the answer but mayby someone does or has an idea.

Quite a few now are running they 1.9 CDTi (150) with tunning modules fitted,at safe to say 180bhp+.
The spec from vxl is 150bhp for the 1.9 150s.

    So here`s my question -

Do you think vxl ran there 1.9 CDTi (150) at 180bhp + and have tuned them down a bit so as not to interfere with the 3.0 CDTi or the later twin turbo CDTi.To tread on other engines toes so to speak.

Vx obviously don't want two engines too close to each other for obvious marketing reasons. Why would you spend the extra on a 3.0 CDTi if the 1.9 CDTi was not very far away from it. It's also a case of dealing with the "lowest common denominator" driver.

My engine for example (2.0T) is remapped and happily kicking out over 210bhp. That's right in GSi territory so why would you spend the extra money on the 3.2 if the 2.0T was almost the same? But these more highly tuned engines also require more attention, so it means owners having to pay more attention to servicing and more frequent oil changes - so the 20/30K interval that Vx proudly state would be out of the window.

So they don't necessarily 'detune' them - they just don't wring out of them what they can as they then don't appeal to Mr and Mrs Average etc as they have to look after them more carefully (more servicing cost etc etc).

That's my take on it anyway!

Its not so much to appeal to Mr and Mrs Average, but in Vauxhall's game it is fleet sales and warrenty claims. By destressing the engine and componants it extends service intervals, reduces warrenty claims and all importantly the CO2 emissions rating which is vital in fleet sales - its all to do with £££££

Thoughthe Mr Mrs average principle allies to why Vauxhall dont have lower suspension - as it has to cater for all.

Thay certainly didn`t wring much out of the 2.2 *lol* it seems hugely underpowered for what it is, My old fiat 2ltr fiat supermirafiori sport (showing my age now) was nearly as powerful and that was a car built 25 years ago !!

when i was in the dealers the other day (had a new armrest under warranty) the mechanic dude (nice chap) said how good the cdti's are and that at 150 bhp for the sri its merely 'tickling' the engine.

how much could you actually get out of the 1.9?

Am I right in thinking that this Fiat is the 2.0 Twin cam?

If so, this is the engine that forms the basis of the 1.9 CDTi 16v. Yep,the good ol 1.9 CDTi used to be a petrol twin cam from Fiat.

Regarding the question in hand, 180bhp from this engine may be about the max you will get, Vauxhall have to ensure durability is passed with all engines.

In Vauxhall's case, durability is 150hours at 6000rpm (Petrol) 5000rpm (Diesel) at 75% load. So basically in 150 bhp form you can throw what you like at it and it is designed not to go bang.

I would say that the 1.9 CDTi running 180bhp would go bang quite early if subjected to a durability test. But of course out on the raod we could never give an engine this serious amount of punishment.

Yep, it was a 2ltr Twin Cam with twin choke webers , Interesting it is the forefather of the CDTi engine, I tell you the Fiat could shift ....

Surely over tuning any engine - petrol or diesel - should effect long term duability and reliablity?
Would be interesting to see if your over tuned engines are still running well way past 100,000 miles!
