    Default Gatso 2 Rollout

    Hi All,

    Saw this today here:

A "24x7 national vehicle movement database" that logs everything on the UK's roads and retains the data for at least two years is now being built, according to an Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) strategy document leaked to the Sunday Times. The system, which will use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), and will be overseen from a control centre in Hendon, London, is a sort of 'Gatso 2' network, extending. enhancing and linking existing CCTV, ANPR and speedcam systems and databases.

Which possibly explains why the sorcerer's apprentices in ACPO's tech section don't seem to have needed any kind of Parliamentary approval to begin the deployment of what promises to be one the most pervasive surveillance systems on earth.

The control centre is intended to go live in April of next year, and is intended to be processing 50 million number plates a day by year end. ACPO national ANPR co-ordinator John Dean told the Sunday Times that fixed ANPR cameras already exist "at strategic points" on every motorway in the UK, and that the intention was to have "good nationwide coverage within the next 12 months." According to ACPO roads policing head Meredydd Hughes, ANPR systems are planned every 400 yards along motorways, and a trial on the M42 near Birmingham will first be used to enforce variable speed limits, then to 'tackle more serious crime.'

Well I think it's good. If it catches un-insured drivers and tax disc dodgers then that is a benefit to all of us. Just leave out speeding

i read this on sunday in the paper - i'm 100% behind it...its about time we adopted a system that stops people cheating insurance etc...but it could be simpler - with discs like tax discs issued by your insuraers...but with less and less coppers on the road this may not carry too much weight...

however - the article says that the cameras should be positioned on motorways and at petrol stations and other main roads - why??? everyone needs to fill up, so instead of putting them on motorways, just put them on the exit of every petrol station........

Agreed, however there's some discussion about the sheer number of cameras. Every 400 yards seems like complete overkill.

exactly - every 400yds - why not every forecourt??? like said b4, everyone needs to go there, not everyone needs to go on the M4...i can get to work easily via country roads without adding moer than 5mins to my journey...

Unfortunately, the vast majority of un-insured and un-licensed drivers drivers don't register the car in their name. So fixed ANPR Cameras will be pretty useless.

Another increase in revenue for the govt then I take it. Fine the legitimate drivers as usual, let the toerags go scott free.

About right for this country at the moment.

AAARGGHHH This is a BAD BAD BAD BAD idea.

Why would they need cameras every 400 yards?? They would say it is to monitor uninsured drivers etc. but as MLC correctly states the un insured & un licensed drivers don't register their cars!! The 400yard cameras will be used so Big brother can keep an eye on where we are going (hmm. Road charging could creep in here nicely ) so they could monitor everybodys speed similar to specs scameras but everywhere!!!. They will want is all to drive liek robots at all times.

This government needs to realise that the motorist that they insist on targetting every chance they get is the people who 'voted' them in. ALL motorists need to resist this.

Unfortunatly I can see the following happening.
    1, they announce this scheme
2, everybody uproars that scheme is bad
3, they introduce something similar but not as severe
4, We all live with new dictatership happy in the knowlegde that it could of been worse!.

    Unfortunately, standard Government policy.

Off topic slightly. You may have seen big headlines about a crackdown on alcohol fuelled disorder in the last few days.
This big Government drive consists of sending a mass of forms to Police Stations, for Officers to fill in, in order to compile 'statistics'. NO extra Police, No extra money. Spin and more spin. I despair more each and every day of this Government
