    Default Convince ME

    Convince me.

At present I have a VW Passat Highline TDI 130 bhp on a 54 plate. I have bought VW now for the last 15 years. My present passat has had 2 x new radiators, 1 x gearbox, 1 x new clutch, 1 x dual mass fly wheel and modified gearbox oil. All fixed under warranty. This is all on a car that is not 3 years old yet. I have also had issues with my past 2 golfs. For some strange reason I have brand loyalty to VW even though I feel they are charging premium prices for a car that is not a premium product. The dealer is excellent and this has played a big part in me staying with VW.

Anyway I am now looking for a new car and saw 2.2i Direct Elite 5dr Auto in motorpoint for £10299 on a 56 plate. I have still to check to see if this is an import. Can you advise me on the following questions?

    • How good are these cars to drive?
    • What is the BHP?
    • Are Vauxhall good with warranty claims for the full 3 years?
    • What are the prices for servicing the cars?
    • Are these cars reliable?
    • I stay in Glasgow are there good dealers or independents that I can take the car to for servicing.
    • And last but not least convince as to why I should move away form VW to Vauxhall apart from that fact that I will save a few quid as that is not an issue as I get a car allowance from my work.

I had a Passat and it was the most unreliable piece of tat I ever owned. Made worse by arrogant and obstructive dealers.

My 2.2 direct was great to drive, economical, more than powerful enough (156bhp IIRC) and was well built. I never had a single issue. I think the engine is probably the most reliable in the Vx range (although others more qualified will be able to comment on this)

My local dealer was great and servicing was reasonable. Can't comment on what Glasgow dealers are like unfortunately.

Welcome to the club by the way.

Price sounds about right for Motorpoint - my 06 plate 2.2 Direct Signum Elite was half price when I bought it a year ago...

I have had my 2.2 Direct Sri for a couple of months now.

I think it is great to drive, very comfortable and reasonably good handling. I was told the car was 154bhp. MPG for me is around 29 in town and 37 on long runs. Can't comment on warranty claims as my car is an 04. Just been quoted £90 for a service from a Independant Vauxhall specalist in East Kilbride. As far as I can gather from the posts on here the cars are fairly reliable.

As for moving from VW to VX, well I have never been a fan of VW's, drove a new Passat recently and was not impressed. In my opinion the Vectra is a much nicer looking car. Only you can decide which car suits you best.
Have you taken the car for a test drive?

I've come to the conclusion that all car manufacturers are pretty much on an even keel these days - you get your great trouble free examples, then you get your absolute lemons of every model out there.
    It's luck of the draw.
Some say the japo cars are slightly above the rest for reliability, not sure if it's true.

I'm in a Skoda Superb right now, it goes ok, the dealers are clueless and I have serious doubts about how well this car is going to hold up, given that it's essentially the same car as yours with different badges and having owned a Vectra C it feels like I shouldn't have bought it, my Vectra I will say did everything well and I knew when I went to go out in it there wouldn't be any problems with it and felt confident of this, in a crash I seriously doubt there is a safer place to be in, check these out http://www.vxrd.com/Vectrauma.htm mines the third one down, it got hit in the side by a van at an estimated 50 mph and only moved over by about 3 inches max, doors didn't burst, and this is another reason I rue buying the Skoda, even the worst of our local Vx dealers is 100x better than the Skoda one.

My 2.2 Direct Auto is fantastic! I was a bit unsure of it at first but now i love it. It can be quite heavy on fuel if you are like me!!

How good are these cars to drive?
    - Take it for a test drive.

    What is the BHP?
    - Around 150bhp

Are Vauxhall good with warranty claims for the full 3 years?
    - Can't say I had any problem during the 1st 3 years. Had a new CIM fitted under warranty with no hassle at all and a couple of other minor things.

What are the prices for servicing the cars?
    - Varies, basic should be around £100-£120, but you may need brake pads, fluid changes, etc. on top of that.

    Are these cars reliable?
    - No better or worse than any others.

I stay in Glasgow are there good dealers or independents that I can take the car to for servicing.
    - Hmmmm, dealers Try a forum search for the usual suspects

And last but not least convince as to why I should move away form VW to Vauxhall apart from that fact that I will save a few quid as that is not an issue as I get a car allowance from my work.
    - Ehhh, this forum

Another point in the Vectra's favour is it's price, spec up the Passat and it'll be 17k + for the same car.

Re Warranty, I had near on £5000 of warranty work done during year three, most of it was labour and car hire, trying to trace a fault. Car was off the road for 8 weeks, 6 of those it was at the factory, they sent me an equivalent spec demonstrator to use for the duration.
