Default Uneven tyre wear and my local fitters technical advice...

....I've just returned from the local tyre fitters place. Basically I wanted x1 (possibly 2) front 205 50 17 fitted as I have wear (down to the minimum) on the outer shoulder of my near side.

The young technician said it was "my power steering", didn't look at the wear on the off side front tyre and said it was a "waste of time" setting my tracking.
I got the feeling that he just couldn't be bothered with it being Friday afternoon so I thanked him for his technical advice and drove off.
Now there is wear on the outer shoulder of the opposite tyre but I'd love to know what "it's your power steering" meant.

Now what I want to do is what everybody else does and just have a new tyre/tyres fitted and have my tracking and balancing done (like I've been doing for the last 19 years of owning a car)

Any advice guys? I live in the sticks a bit so it's quite difficult to readily get a second opinion. Many thanks in advance.

I had all my tyres changed recently and they checked the tracking BEFORE they fitted the new tyres, and I think they knew what they were doing.

The only risk being that they knock the tracking off a touch taking the wheels on and off.

With regards to your power steering, I presume he means you're one of those people who sit in their drives turning the steering wheel back and forth all day causing flat spots...

Also 205/50/17's are the wrong size. Should be 215/50/17 or 225/45/17 really. It just sounds like he's fobbed you off.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Sorry my mistake BS, they're 215's yeah.

The car's got 45,000 on the clock Rick and it doesn't wander.

Ridge: I used to do that when I was a kid! LOL.

I'm going up North tomorrow. I know some good tyre dealers in Darlington so that's where I'll take my business. I don't like dealing with kids to be honest.
    'Power steering' indeed!

If the tyres are both worn on the outside (opposit sides) that would suggest miss alignment of the tyres.

/ \ the tyres are probably like this

\ / this should wear the insides.

Thanks lads. I'll just get the tracking sorted and the tyres changed then.

    Thought I was going mad!

    Cheers.
