With all this 30-70 talk and bhp talk lately its got me hungry for a bit more power AND better handling.
Been looking on Autotrader and I've still yet to see a Vectra VXR below £15K, even private. Still a bit pricey.
Not sure about losing out on the mpg though. Dropping down from 34mpg-42mpg to well under 30mpg could be a bit of a killer. Also I'd only consider an early one cos of the cheaper road tax.
But, reading a few reports makes them very temping .... seems a cracking car for the money. And starts off at 255bhp (or 280bhp) and well tunable.
Mmmmmmmmmmmm
But in reality I'm not sure how much quicker it would really be over my 3.0. For sure the handling should be much, much better but the performnace............. It would be without doubt quicker, but would it be enough to justify the extra cost to buy it in the first place and running costs - extra insurance/fuel?
The difference isn't low down. Imagine something with slightly less torque below 3000rpm than you currently drive, but that keeps pulling all the way to 5300rpm with no drop off in thrust at all (280hp version), and will keep going to 6000rpm.

See...... you've already lost him
Its no good telling him that he will be loosing power at the bottom end (where he uses it most)... but then tell him that he will get more power at the top end (where he uses it less...)
You have to say something like....
Imagine something with 340 BHP.... more torque at the bottom end.... more torque in the middle.... and it keeps going for ever till your eyes pop out onto the dashboard..... All the girls will want a piece of your action and you will be the centre of attention at all the Vectra-C.com meets...... even if you had 20 club members crammed in and clinging to this 'raging bull' during a high speed test drive... it would still out accellerate your 3.0 Diesel !!
Fuel costs will be a problem but as Lorreal says "your worth it !!"
Sign here chappie, before someone else grabs the keys !!
Then you've got him....

And the set of tyres that he's just shredded?
All the big engined VX's seem to plummet in price fairly quickly. My 3.0CDTi was essentially half retail price after 6 months.
My local dealer still has a 2.8 turbo Vectra estate sat on the forecourt for months at 15 grand, but nobody wants it. Too expensive to run.

In my book, cars with big engines need to either be luxurious and have a badge (e.g. Merc, Jag) or be sporty.
A non-VXR Veccie or Signum with a 2.8T is neither, so is always going to be difficult to shift.
Despite the fact I seem to get 31mpg out of mine fairly regularly...

love to get one some day...... working on it.
