Default 1 ltr Oil added already !!

    Hi Guys,

Please help, I had a service on my 2.2sri in April, since then I have had to add 1 litre of oil in 2 stages, this has now been used up and the oil light is on again.

    Is this normal ?

Should I just get a oil and filter change done now?

    Thanks

I have had my 2.2 petrol for approx 23 months and to date I have never had to put in as much as a thimble full between services (PDI and my first one) I would get that amount of oil usage checked out asap. But then again how are you driving it and what mileage are you putting in?

Sounds like you may have a leak somewhere, check behind the turbo the ring is a fav for letting oil past, diesel engines do consume oil by nature though, how many miles have you done in it so far?

An oil and filter change will help anyway and you should do it, use VX 10/40 semi synth at the very least, it's not a hard job, the belly tray needs to come down, be careful to support it or it will flop and rip, and at £160 a go they ain't cheap, also the sump nut has a habit of being very hard to move, so get a good torx of the right size and a bar it it is stuck, make sure you replace the two rubber rings on the oil filter housing stalk. hth.

VV - it may be a petrol 2.2

It does sound like a leak to me - have you notced any pools or drips of oil on the driveway at all?

Mine (although it is a 1.8) has had leaks from both the rear main oil seal and the sump plug recently, and I've had to put in similar amounts of oil.

Now on my 3rd vectra and its the first not to use a litre per 1000 miles, my 2.0dti was horrendous, cost more in oil than petrol!

Thanks guys for all your good advice.

Mine is a petrol 2.2, i've had it now for about 1 and half years. last year I had to add 1 litre of oil between the 12 month service, now this year only 6 months have passed and like I said earlier it has already used the extra litre.

There aren't any leaks on the drive at all. I do only travel a short distance to work each day and generally do short journeys, except for once or twice a week when I give it a good run.

Im doing about 10 -12k miles per year

I had a brand new 2003 2.2 elegance & it used a litre of oil every 3000 miles from new until I got the diesel when it had done 122000 miles, VX said it was OK

Does sound a bit excessive mate. My 2.2 petrol doesn't use a drop now its fixed although it was once burning oil due to a broken oil scraper ring and also the head cracked which lead to oil being burned on zorst manifold. Due to it burning on manifold there was never any oil on road so it took a bit of finding. If your engine is clean including the head start by checking your coolant. Any smoke on start up?

    Eek

I spoke to vauxhall about this last week. the guy at the service dept. said that if you read the manual, the section on oil consumption states that it can use 1 litre of oil per 1000 miles.

    WOW....

However he also said that this is not true for all the vectras, but this is what could be consumed.

At over £11 per litre I hope that my veccy doesn't get any thirstier..
