I think the biggest advantage of the sat nav built in is the convenience and the tmc. I have a tom tom which i use every day in the truck but I have to pay for traffic info, Connect it to my phone for downloads and keep taking the cradle off every night. When I get in the car i don't really wanna be messing around with all the above when I can have it there in front of me with no messing.

    Yes it does!!!

Try entering a postcode instead of a city in the destination input section!

Tomtom 910 for me, cabling all hidden apart from the last few inches to the unit, has bluetooth hands free & a 20gb hard drive for MP3's etc, can even control my ipod. Just a shame no input to the stereo in the vX

Problem with the built in sat nav is it is rarely updated so as roads change your sat nav is wrong, in aberdeen for instance a lot of changes in the last couple of years so sat nav thinks you are approaching roundabouts which are gone !! The factory option does look nicer in the dash though, and the mp3 player is good as well ..

The in car Sat Nav has been great for me - I have had no troubles with it but then again I cannot compare it to Tom Tom's etc as I have never had one.

I have noticed a vast difference in the current road layout on my latest (56) Siggy compared to my 04 & 55 plated ones. Ensuring you get the latest discs when you get your new motor (or obtaining the latest discs if possible when you are not changing your motor) should keep you pretty much up to date I would imagine.

When we get the voice activated ones and poi auto update, the fitted ones will be king, but right now I still think a sucker jobby does far more.

For the last 2 years I've been using SmartNav from TrafficMaster. This is a bit different from traditional satnav systems in that it holds no maps, and uses the GSM mobile network to download routes on demand. You can enter destinations by full postcode, by choosing from a list of favorites, or by pressing a button which connects you to their call centre.

Actually is works very well, with no fiddly programming, no threat of it being stolen (it has to be professionally fitted), and no need to update maps etc. Its real big advantage is that it uses TrafficMaster's extensive traffic congestion data to plot the best route, avoiding the queues!

I have to say that the inbuilt CD70 is an excellent choice, MP3 built in, colour screen, plus the big bonus, Traffic Master info. So it will re-route you from your planned route if there are delays ahead so you should always keep on the move.
Couldn't live without it to be honest.
