Default tuning boxes - any good?

Have been looking at tuning boxes for a 1.9 150 design.

Some on E-bay for around £100'ish...

Just wondered if they were any good, and if they were safe to use?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

You're going to get loads of replies on this........

try doing a search for the subject on here. I just did and got 25 returns. A lot of people would recommend either a remap or a caterman box (you can google caterman box and find out about it). Have a go.

Of course everything that is on fleabay is top quality, isn't it? Worth doing a search on here for ebay to find some hilarious rubbish that people are trying to sell.

Hope that helps - don't forget to tell your insurance about any mods

It is purely down to the individual to decide what route theu wish to take.

Fom my point of view, I would not touch a tuning box of any type, fooling the ECU into thinking fuel pressure has not been reached, to make the fuel pump work harder is not my idea of reliable tuning.

They do offer bigger gains on the "rolling road", purely as they over ride any safety parameters set by the original mapping, out on the open road, they are no better with regards to performance than a re-map.

Re-maps are the safer way to increase power, as they adjust, fuel pressure, injector timing and boost pressure to get the extra BHP & lb/ft but staying within the safety net of the management.

That said, not many on here have experienced reliability issues with tuning box's, these are just my personal opinions.
