    Default broadband speed question

Hi all, please bear with me this might seem a bit long-winded. have just upgraded my broadband fron 2mg to 8mg. was on the 2mg for about 2years, anyway i live only half a mile from the bt exchange and have a brand new line from the telegraph pole to the house. i am only able to d/load on average about 2.4 mg even though it says i am connected at 6.8mg . the pc is in the upstairs spare bedroom with the phone line routed from the main d/stairs socket to the upstairs socket then extends to a surge protector then to a usb modem. do you think this affects the speed? would i be better off getting a router? have even swapped modems and micro filters but still poor, i was able to download 2mg on my old 2mg service please help

Nope! There is a big debate going on at the moment and the "big 6" providers are going to be made to advertise their true speeds not what might be the maximum.
There are a lot of factors that will affect your speed m8, distance from the exchange, data traffic, etc etc.
I live less than a mile from the exchange and get a max of 6.5Mbps even though i am supposed to get 8meg

    I'm the same.

I live about 1000 yards from my exchange and although I'm supposed to be able to get 8 Mbps, I normally average around 6 Mbps. I've seen it jump to about 7.0Mbps but only briefly.

At my old house I was getting 8MB now reduced to 6 but it doesn't feel that much slower.

If the increase is from 2.0 to 2.4Mbps then I would contact the ISP and advise that the exchange is unsuitable for LLU (Local Loop Unbundling) and you want to downgrade back to the previous 2.0Mbps until the exchange can be confirmed as suitable
Goods and Services Act would apply, so you have 15 days in which to do this

Ask BT to reset your line at the exchange, then in the following 10 days download stuff regulary as your line will be monitored for use etc, for some strange reason ours often gets capped at 512k at the exchange, BT come out, reset it and its ok for for a while, may because you've been on a 2mg service and your line is still capped at the exchange at 2mg.. we live around 4 or so miles from our exchange and at the moment we're connected at 6480mbps download and 468kps upload..

That'll be high contention ratio's with either BT's kit or your isp's, basically to many users using each bit of kit at the same time, ask your isp what their ratio's are. Or you may have a faulty ADSL filter knocking your ADSL signal down.. We've also had this, plug your modem/router into the test socket on your main BT socket and see if the download speed has increased. if it has you know its a wiring or filter fault..
