Default Some Stage 3 acceleration timings.....

Well after getting the new timing software, it seemed rude not to go and try it out properly as soon as I could!

So, found a couple of suitable bits of road and did a bunch of tests.

Car had just me in it, 3/4 tank of fuel and outside temp was around 12/13°C

My procedure was to get the car at a steady speed using cruise control so that the speed was just under the starting speed of 30 or 50mph. I then accelerated and as soon as the car reached the starting speed the timer started automatically, and stopped again on reaching the upper speed. I took the best three times and averaged them out to get the result....

    30-50mph (2nd gear)

    2.56 / 2.59 / 2.66 - Average = 2.60

    30-50mph (3rd gear)

    2.94 / 2.98 / 3.05 - Average = 2.99

    50-70 (3rd gear)

    3.59 / 3.59 / 3.60 - Average = 3.59

    50-70 (4th gear)

    3.60 / 3.72 / 3.83 - Average = 3.72

    50-70 (5th gear)

    4.23 / 4.34 / 4.47 - Average = 4.35

All I can say is I'm suitably impressed!!! Seeing a couple of times posted by VXR_DV for his VXR (50-70 in 3rd - 3.7s and 50-70 in 5th - 5.9) brings a big smile to my face, especially as I know that my times are pretty accurate given the software being used. It'd be interesting to see what actual times his VXR got using the same software, instead of the manual method. For all I know he could have been stopping the clock too late and his times are actually a bit less than he said. As he's not too far away from me maybe he'll fancy a meet up to have a go with the kit.

Anyway, the reason for the thread wasn't a "mine's faster than yours" kinda thing. I was curious to see what kind of figures the car was giving, and the 30-50 and 50-70 seemed like a good one to use, and it's reinforced exactly what I knew - the car is effing quick!!

EDIT: Did some 30-70 times as per this post.....

    30-70 (3rd gear)

    5.82 / 5.94 / 6.17 - Average = 5.97

    30-70 (2nd through 3rd)

    5.62 / 5.72 / 5.81 - Average = 5.71

So basically if I was accelerating from 30-70 I wouldn't bother faffing around with a gear change from 2nd to 3rd - I'd just keep it in 3rd as it's barely any slower given that boost is more full on then.

Looks quick Another great one is 30-70 through the gears (usually just 2nd, and then 3rd gears) & 30-70 in 4th to see the flexibility.
    Watch that licence!

Will give the 30-70 in 4th a shot another day - forgot that one! Certainly can't nip out now as I've just quaffed a Jim Beams and about to get another! - glass, not bottle I should add!!

Will also give the 30-70 in 2nd/3rd a shot too.

Yes indeedy!! I did the first tests on a 50mph limit road, and the second on a 70 limit road - so would only have just gone over before slowing down.

I hadn't realised that DV's was the 280bhp VXR (thought it was the 255), but it'd be really good to see what times he would get with the same kit, rather than manual timing - so it's a direct comparison. I think a VXR with a BSR/EDS remap would probably be bringing in quicker times than mine though.

oh no, don't go there! Well we're both at the forthcoming rolling road day on the 20th so it'd be interesting to get them both on the road together (as in the highway) and let him see what a turbo petrol can really do!!

You need to try it on exactly the same stretch of road as where you did it. Else do it together in a new location and repeat all the tests.

Probably not strictly necessary, but I can see the rational behind it - same road surface, prevailing wind, atmosphere etc. etc.

Its not that, not many roads are perfectly flat, i.e. horizontal. You dont want to do any testing on roads with any inclines, even slight.
