Default Anyone Else Had to Replace a Steering Rack?

Anyone else had a problem with excessive play coming from steering rack? Went for 4 wheel tracking and they would only do the rear because the front wheels had a good couple of mm play in the steering! They showed me and I could see what they were talking about straight away.

Been quoted £630 + VAT for a new VX item. I have also found a place that will recondition mine for £170 + VAT. Only problem is, they don't stock them so they want mine so they can recondition it for me and they want it for 3 or 4 days.

I don't mind the price for the reconditioned unit but wasn't banking on loosing the car for a few days in the process.

    Anyone got any other idea's?

The play was definately in the steering. We tested it by pushing and pulling on the front wheels while jacked up off the ground, just like you would test a wheel bearing. When we saw the movement it was the whole hub assembly (not just a loose bearing) and there was definate movement before the steering rack moved.

Is it not just the track rod ends that have the play?

A definate movement at the hub before the steering rack moved would point to a track rod end.

If the whole track rod moved on one side before the steering wheel or other track rod started to move that would point to the rack being at fault.

Hey good point! It's actually going down to a mates garage to be fixed so I'm sure the track rod ends will be checked before we go ahead and send the rack away, but at least this gives me hope!

I don't know why I didn't think of this myself. I guess I just got suckered into following what the tracking guy said. Which is odd, because he was quite open to me "I'm not a mechanic, I just do tracking". Which I know sounds like an odd statement to make if you 're doing tracking on a car. But this was at Protyre in Bristol with one of those PC driven automatic 4 wheel geometry machines. He didn't have to line anything up on the wheels etc. He just plonked some things on each wheel that looked like satelite dishes and the computer worked out which direction all the wheels were pointing in. All he needed to know was which bolt to turn to adjust it - and guess what, the tracking machine told him that too!

Mrs GSi had a new steering rack recently as it just went on her - no warning. Under warranty fortunately.

Mine had an advisory at it's last MOT that it was weeping, but okay. The other day I was under the car and I'd say it was more than weeping - it's a bit of a mess. Probably cilmination of weeping over a bit of time. Anyway, it's going into the dealer soon to get looked at as I don't want it just going one day, and it'll all be under my Net Q extended warranty as well.

it could be 2 things, both common on vec C's..

it could be worn out track rod ends..or it could be the track rod inner joints worn out..( a slightly more involved job, but not as bad as swapping a rack..)

    some idea of pricing..

New rack as fitted to Mrs GSi's signum last month £580+vat+fitting
track rod inner repair kit £40ish+vat from VX
track rod ends £20ish +vat from VX..

my hunch says inner trackrod repair kit needed..

Ok, got a second opinion from Kwik Fit today. They diagnosed it straight away as the inner ends. So thanks for your suggestion, it would seem spot on!

Regarding price. Kwik Fit have started doing their own kit and it's £74.99 per side - including track rod ends - including tracking!

Nice one! It's booked in on Sat along with 4 new tryes we're up and running again!

Thanks for all your help guys. (again!)

I forgot to mention that this kit is apparently the same kit for the Vauxhall range. I don't know how much to read into that, but they said while the actual racks are different the tracking rods and the track rod ends that come with the kit are universal across most vauxhall's. I assume they meant most Vauxhalls of a similar age.

Mine is an '04 Vectra GSi for reference. When I get it done i'll post the part details (part number etc.) if anyone wants to compare it with a kit purchased for their own car which isn't a GSi, or even a Vectra/Signum..
