I think you will find they are more or less the same, around 30 round town, maybe high 20's. On a longrun, motorway mailes, high 30's from both, maybe low 40's. In my old astra - 52 plate - 1.8 I never got more than 40, even on a motorway.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

I can only help with the 2.0 Turbo if thats what you mean, Im getting around 30mpg mixed driving and the 2.2 won't be much better probably worse TBH and the the most I've ever heard from a 1.8 is 37mpg and thats very rare your talking more high 20's as its under powered for the car. TBH the turbo is the best option as mpg doesn't very much from the 2.2 or 1.8 and it goes aswell and since you own a V6 Im sure you'll enjoy that, and it can be tuned quite easily. HTH

I've got a 1.8 estate and I average 34-36 (best I've had is 41) in general combined motoway/A road/B roads - majority of my work is A and B roads to be honest.

Never heard any problems about a 1.8, 2.2 can have problems with the cam chain so thats one to look at. Just to add aswell the 2.0turbo is based on the 2.2 with a few differences and a turbo slapped on.

The Z18XE that I had - same engine in the C - never went wrong in 62k. I think there is not much between them tbh

The chain was really only an issue on the early non direct 2.2's, regular oil changes and it will be fine
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

I've got a 2.2 direct, and that always seems to be around 32.8mpg around town, and about 38-40mpg on a run. My record in 47.2mpg just after a fill up, and a range of 515 miles (realistically I get 400 to a tank)!!

Both me and a mate of mine have the 2.2direct, and none of us have had any problems.

    Hope this helps.

2.2 automatic has been giving 34 to 38 mpg on regular 34 mile run to office, 7miles B roads, motorway, the crawl through town.
