    Default Glovebox Light

sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt, and for the last 3 weeks it hasnt been working at all. none of the other lights linked to the glovebox light are broken, the switch that pushes in/releases when the glovebox is closed/open is not jammed. and like I say the for a while it didnt work, then it worked again, now it doesnt. so I dont think the bulb is needing replaced either.

any ideas? (its an 05 54 2.0 dti if thats relevant)

It could be the bulb is on its way out and just meking contact at certain times, The switch is really poor on the glove box light as well, it is just a piece of metal which is bent and un springs when you open the glove box, it could be losing its springyness, Be carefull if you take the liight out not to unplug it as it is a real pain to connect again, I changed my light to blue and did this, the air was very blue by the time I got the plug back in !!!

Don't know if yours is different Tommy (wouldn't have thought so) but I've had my glovebox out several times so have needed to unplug the light cable to let me take the box out of the car - went back on no problem! Maybe your connector is a bit iffy?

As for your problem Hendry, I'd concur with Tommy. Have a look at the actual contact - see if it's lost some of it's springyness.

Maybe my wire is shorter than yours ? When I tried to plug the light back on I had to put it back into the hole, then I couldn`t get my fingers in to put the plug in place ? I got it eventually. When the lights went out in the car I put the normal bulbs in as I thought VX would say it was because I had blue bulbs and not cover it under warranty. When I got the car back the wire in the glove box had been lengthened by the mechanics so they must have had the same problem, A pretty rough job as well with lots of insulating tape *lol*

Your best bet is just to take the glove box out mate. As the guys have said the switch is very simple. To get the box out you need to pull the the plastic strip off that runs along the top of the sterio and along the box. Its quite strong but just be carfull. Pull it off from the door side and it should just unclip. There are 3 torx screws under that and another 2 down under the hinges. I think the torx are size 25.
    Best of luck

You sure about that? I've never had to remove the trim strip. Just pop off a little square cover over each of the screws along the top of the box and two at the bottom (under the hinge).

Could be the Vec is different to the Signum? (thought the dash was identical?) or else they've changed things on different years?

I'm thinking of overhauling the glovebox light completely and replacing it with a cold cathode light like I fitted in my Astra G. very effective way to light the box, and available in many varied colours: I had 2 in the Astra for top and bottom shelves.

If anyone has an Astra-G, or knows someone who does... this is a cracking way of securing a CD changer behind a secure plate and a very easy mod.
