Default VX shock absorber life expectancy :(

I know we have discussed rear shock failure on numerous occasions on here, indeed mine failed about a year ago.

They we changed by VX (just about a year, need to check the invoice) and it looks like one is leaking My car stood all weekend which is rare and this morning I noticed a small stain on the road which looks very similar to last time and in the same place.

I imagine that VX only guarantee these shocks for a year or do they consider the milege too ? i've done about 20k on them.

Are they covered by the normal "everything you buy needs a 12 month guarantee" rule ?

TBH i'm considering just buying non VX shocks and changing them myself which is what I should have done last time but didn't get round to it

Any recommendation for a standard equivalent shock please ?

yep, get either Koni, bilsteins or Gabriel dampers.... all quality makes.. should last a heck of a lot longer than the 20K that you replacements have..

TBH, i think that you'll find it hard to get VX to swap them again..they'll say that 20K is a fair life ( which it isn't)

I must be quite lucky then Mark, mine are all the original shocks.
Not bad considering the mileage on the car

yep, but you're all motorway miles...so easy on the shocks....

state of most B roads is a killer on shocks....

mind you, 44K on mine and still going strong..

Just checked and they were changed at 47k, now on 62K so a few less miles than I thought.

I've never known a car get through them so quick.

I need to check that it is the actual shock leaking to be sure, if it is I might try VX and see how it goes.

I'm leaning towards just fitting a difference make and be done with it though.

Vaux dampers are total junk. The rears on my Astra were knackered at 40k.

Stick on a set of Koni FSDs.

it's possible to do the job on ramps, or even on the floor.. the top fixing is just accessable over the wheel, and the lower one hangs out in fresh air underneath....2 torx fixings E18 on the top, E20 on the lower...and pull it down out of the top clamp..

Thanks mate, sounds OK. I have changed shocks before but it was the front ones on a mini many moons ago.

Just one more thing to pick your brian about is there a torque setting or is it just FT !
