    Question DPF Cleaning?

Driving back from mum's this evening, kids fast asleep in the back, stereo on quietly, no traffic....life's good

Joined the dual carriageway, put my foot down to nip into a gap between a couple of lorries..........and nearly fell off my seat.......

All of a sudden I had a noise coming from my 4 week old, lifetime-guaranteed stainless steel exhaust. Everyone know what a blowing exhaust sounds like? Yeah? That was it. Nah, can't be, I thought. Must have been a rumble strip on the road or something loose in the boot vibrating. So I tried again. And got the same noise.

Now I was worried! I kept an eye on it the rest of the way home, and it got worse if anything. I really did wonder what was going on, so out of interest, I flicked the trip computer onto instantaneous consumption and at a steady 70mph, I watched the consumption go from around 50 to 32!!

I rattled the car home, put the boys in bed and went out to have a poke around. I turned the engine over, got a torch and had a look underneath the car to see where this noise was coming from. I couldn't see squat. All the welds looked perfect, all the pipework still intact, nothing to give any clue what was wrong.

Then, all of a sudden, it stopped.

    Just like that.

Car's running sweet as a nut again. The only thing I could think was that the DPF was running its cleaning cycle, but there was no light on the dash like there's supposed to be.

    Any ideas anyone?

Sounds like it was. The light is meant to come on on the dash when it regenerates, but other people have reported what you've said - rough running and big drop in mpg - and assumed it was the DPF. They also had no light come on. It does say in the manual that it comes on, but I wonder if after the software update it no longer does that? Has yours had the DPF software update?

On the Astra/Zafira the update changed the way the warning light (glow plug light) worked.

The light only ever comes on if the DPF is nearly blocked (80% IIRC) and indicates that you need to change your driving style or take a trip on the motorway. It doesn't illuminate when the DPF is regenerating.

Saying that since Vauxhall don't seem to know their a**e from their elbows and it took 4 visits to get my DPF sorted it could all be total cack...

It has, and the remap also had further updates to the regeneration instructions.

Nope no light for me when it regens and what you describe does sound like it's the Regen you experienced ... Sounds like perhaps another nasty side effect of having a DPF on your car?

Are these particle filters fitted to all new vectra's?

I have a 57 plate, 1.9 cdti 120ps hatchback and was wondering if it has one fitted?

Can anyone actually answer why they never put them on the hatch or saloon, seems to me a bit pointless using it on some and not the others.
