Exclamation Z22YH In Need Of A Timing Chain...

The on going saga of my strange rattle continues...
I took off the aux drive belt yesterday and started the engine with my fingers and toes crossed hoping the rattle would be the alternator or the air con compressor or maybe even the belt tensioner......its not With the air box out and with access from underneath I would say the noise is defo coming from the timing chain Iv'e only had the car 2 days!!!

The noise seems more noticable when youre actually driving down the road, it sounds like a ****** D reg ford escort with a 1.1 litre push rod engine

The garage I bought it from says they've "serviced" it but to me the oil filter houseing and sump plug bolt don't look like they've been touched recently, will some fresh decent oil make a difference?

Maybe its the chain tensioner that has failed? can you change just the tensioner or is it a case of while you've got it in bits you might as well replace the chain too? I really don't like driving it while its making this noise but its the only form of transport I have, my **** goes every time I turn the key

Any advice would be fantastic thanks...

Mate def the chain, your right might as well do the tensioner and chain together, cost roughly £160 as a complete kit if your brave enough to do the job yourself, at the stealers roughly £750.

I'd complain to the garage and see if you can force their hand into fixing it FOC for you..

If they won't, and you don't fancy doing it for yourself, then drop 'Benny' a PM either on here or on z22se.com and he'll do it much cheaper than VX prices..

The garage claim to have serviced it??.. is the oil new or dirty? that'd tell you for sure..

I wouldn't advise just replacing the tensioner.. if it's rattling well, then i do fear it's chains..

they did, back in 2001... but they will still wear out eventually.. they are not for life..

Some will wear out quicker than others as well.. it's a factor of how well you keep the oil clean, so service overand above the schedule to avoid early trouble..

You very rarely hear of the DTi's chains wearing, are they different/stronger?
