Thumbs up Z22yh With a strange rattle...please help!

    Hello,

I have recently become the very happy owner of a 2004 2.2 direct SRi in sapphire black. It has the z22yh engine and has done about 51000 miles with full service history. My problem is that there is a strange metallic like rattling noise coming from what seems to be the timing chain area which is consistent with engine revs (Iím no expert!) and is worse when starting from cold but lessens a bit as the engine warms up. Having read various posts about timing chains snapping Iím now terrified to drive it! My question is: does anyone know if the timing chain/smaller/blocked oil jet issue has been resolved on the z22yh engine and am I panicking unnecessarily? If so, any ideas on what the noise could be?

Apologies if I've posted this in the wrong place but I have never posted on a forum in my entire life till I found this site, what a great site it is too

are there any fellow 2.2 direct owners who have had similar problems to me?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks

what you have sounds like the tensioner is no longer working and taking up the slack in the chain..so either the chain has stretched, or the tensoiner needs looking at..

the oil spray jet was sorted out in late 2001 and all the z22se's had remedial work carried out at dealers if they where presenting problems.. the Z22yh has the bigger jets..

I'd get it looked at sooner rather than later, just to be safe..

for more comprehensive info on your engine, visit www.z22se.com and they can answer any engine questions you have..Benny is the tech whizz over there..

    Hello again,

Thanks for the replys, I had no idea they would be so quick!! I've had a look on z22se.com but can't seem to find much info on the z22yh engine with similar problems? I took my car to a local garage and he said quote "ive no idea what could be the problem mate but changing the timming chain on these is a absolute nightmare of a job!" Needless to say, I got in the car and swiftly drove off in the opposite direction!! I'am no technician but my rattle does sound like (to me at least!) the chain flapping about a bit?

I'll just have to keep searching the forums for info I think, at least untill I find a decent mechanic with a higher IQ than a chimp to look at my car!

    cheers...

The z22yh and the z22se are all but the same lump mate just some head differences, Benny will do your chain for about £250 inc parts I think. PM him on here or on z22se .co.uk

yep..he's a whizz with the chains apparently...

if you can get hold of a backcopy of total vauxhall magazine from about 3 months ago, they did a pictorial 'how-2' on changing the chains..just so you can see whats involved with it..it's a big job, but not horrifically big in the scale of things....

I get a 1-2 sec grinding noise when I start my 2.2 up, its on 53 plate - do you think it could be cam chain? It has full VX history, always done yearly and 10K under the service date.. Seeing as I've just bought it, if it is that - will they do it under network q?

    Cheers,

    Chris.

If you have a netty q then get it back to dealer to get it checked out, if it is the chain it will be covered, my advice would be to drop it off at the dealer the night before so they can start it from cold (when chains are most noisey)

yep..the noise will be worst in the morning due to drainback of the engine oil..so give them every chance to hear how bad it is....using 5W30 oil also helps as it pumps easier when cold, so reaches the tensioner better
