    confused Droning noise

I 've got a problem with my 3.2.

Coming home from work last night there was an awful noise that I can only describe as a drooning type noise. Didn't notice it on the way in but the radio was turned up!

It seems to really kick in when you get to about 40mph. Although I said drooning it might sound a bit strange but it sounds just like a dynamo (for those old enough to remember) almost like a driven noise if you get my drift.

I thought it may have been the electric power steering pump but I am not so sure now. The steering works fine and there is no leakage.

The noise is not there when stationary but once moving at 40mph+. The noise does change slightly with increased speed but depressing the clutch, freewheeling in neutral or even switching the engine/ignition off totally seem to have no effect.

    Any Ideas

Sure it is not from the gearbox, doe,s the noise disapear when you accelerate.
It maybe transmitted from the road wheels through the gearbox hence no change when you press the clutch.

    Is it from the rear?
Could be uneven wear on the rear tyres. there have been several threads on that. Have a search.

To be honest don't know if it's the gearbox or not. The noise does not diappear when you accelerate just changes pitch, less of a deep drone.

Yep It might be worth swapping the front tyres and put them on the rear. I was talking to a mate at work yesterday, He has a vectra too and he was told it was the rear wheel bearing,s But he got another mechanic to look at it and he said the bearings were ok, But the rear tyers had worn out of shape and showed him the distortion, that was making the drumming noise, must addmit I have not heard of it before, but not disputing the idea though.

Could be a wheel bearing! Does the noise change/disappear when you turn slightly left or right??
