Strange fuel consumption problem?

I've been having this strange fuel consumption problem just every now and then, i find when i'll be driving along in my 1.9CDTi auto and the exhaust roars like a sport car but the stationary mpg goes 0.8 gal/h and driving along 30mpg goes 22 gal/h

I usually stop and turn the engine off and restart then everything gets back to normal i.e stationary mpg 0.2gal/h and the roaring from the exauhst stops!

What could be going on?

The exhaust catches soot emissions with a filter, after a while it gets blocked up and has to regenerate itself, so the car has to build up a hot temp to enable this, DPF stands for Diesel particulate Filter, hth.

Do a search on here under DPF or Diesel Particulate Filter. Pleanty of threads around that explains them in more detail. It is this that brings the car up to EuroIV standard by keeping the C02 emmisions down

Clever idea, shame it uses about 1/4 of a tank of DERV when it does it..
