    Default Spec type speed cameras

I heard today that if you are driving along a dual carraigeway or motorway and you suddenly realise that you may have "went over" the speed limit, that if you change lanes the camera can not recognise you in the new lane!.

I feel that it may well be a tall story and can't really think for a minute that they do not have the systems in place to beat this "loop hole". Can any one advise if this is another old wifes tale?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Paul, Ok for tomorrow?

Fallacy this one I think. They say it applies where there are 3 lanes and only 2 cameras, which lane is it covering. I noticed on the M1, Sheffield the camera doesn't point to the inner lane. You have to have one camera per lane. Personally I wouldn't like to put it to the test.

I can believe it to be true, there are so many variables that the camera cannot cope with them all, or it would cost millions more to develop. They just plump for the regulation speeder's and if a few manage to avoid fines/points through knowingly or unknowingly finding a way round it, then so be it. They make more than enough out of the motorist to stand the few who dont get caught.

I know for fact the Spec's Camera's on the M1 between J8 and J11 either dont work or you can change lanes and not get caught. When it was a 40mph limit i got on at J11, went through the Roadworks at 4am in my own little world. It ws only when i was on the M25 i realised i had come thru them on the speed limiter(58mph). I was overtaking other vehicles and moving back in, then out to over take etc. That was in January this year and still no speeding ticket/fine!

Lucky, maybe but i think there is more to the Changing Lanes thing than meets the eye.

The camera is programmed to record time between Point A and Point B on one lane, if you change lanes, you have travelled further than the distance the camera is programmed to detect, therefore rendering any readings null and void!

    Its something like that anyway.

The cameras read the majority of number plates, it's about 93%
    All images are recorded
If a number plate is read, then the average speed is recorded
If this average speed is above the limit set then the images are recorded and stored

If no number plate is read then both images are recorded and stored irrespective of the speed

The Home Office requirements for SPECS cameras are that they are only used on one lane
This means that if you pass the first camera in lane 1 and pass the second camera in lane 2, the images cannot be used as evidence for speeding
However, the images can still be used for other offences

The images although high quality, make it difficult to identify the driver in many cases as they do not center on the driver
Almost all cases where the FPN has been declined the driver cannot be identified
Although the driver may be identified in one image, the other they cannot, and even this cannot be used as evidence

I remember reading about this a while ago.

When the Specs cameras were positioned on the M56 earlier this year at Runcorn the whole outside lane traffic swapped with the traffic in the middle one every day for three months. Team game avoiding the Specs.
