Thoroughly agree with all the above - too many people simply head for Cite Europe without taking in some of the local scene. Nothing wrong with that, but it just re-inforces the view of the average French person about us parochial Brits.
IMHO Cite Europe is also more expensive; The Auchan is a much better bet. Boulogne really is a great place to have lunch.
I always buy my wine at Majestic wine warehouse (wine and beer world) on the way to the ferry (the tunnel is on the O'Rilla blacklist after they wanted 90 quid off me for travelling 2.5 hours earlier than the ticket - P&O will always put you on if there is room)
Whatever you do, I hope the weather is good and you both have a really good time. There are some surprising bargains to be had as well. Try this link for some specific ideas -

As has already been said, Bolougne isnt far down the road. Belgium is only half an hour up the motorway if you want to stock up on the Duty Free's, Veurne is quite a nice town, with a fair few "cheap" tobacco places in nearby Adinkerke.
Just have a drive round mate and find the places for yourself, thats the way we learnt and had a great time.
Thought it was only a day trip. Becoming an adventure. Time flies when your in France. Especially if your not sure where you are going...
