Unhappy Well I did say the Stage 3 was a potential license loser......

....and today I got my first three points towards it!!

Gave the car a quick wash and went out onto the local bypass to give it a 'blow dry' - something I normally do, first time since I got the stage 3. Peeled off the roundabout onto the dual-carriageway (70 limit) and went through the gears. Looked down at the speedo and it was passing 90 and still climbing!!! - "Ferking hell!!" I thought and eased off. I couldn't believe how quickly, and smoothly!!, it had got up to that speed!!

I then noticed a blue car behind me with what I thought was a Toyota badge. I thought myself that the police didn't use Toyota's (unmarked) so breathed a slight sigh of relief, but all the time I was still slowing down since the stretch of road I use between the two roundabouts is only 1.5 miles long and I was approaching the next roundabout. I did a U-turn at the roundabout and headed back home. Noticed that the blue car was behind me again. "Hmm.." I thought and I made sure I was doing 70. I looked closer at the driver and I could see a white shirt collar which made me begin to wonder even more if I had an unmarked behind me.

Got to the roundabout and turned right (instead of left towards home) as I was popping into Halfords - this was 40mph limit now. Still the blue car was behind me - so I was beginning to think it was looking ominous. Next second the lights came on and siren - "Bu**er!" I thought. PC came up saying why he'd stopped me and got me to his car to look at the frozen video frame with the VASCAR result. At this point I realised it was a Skoda (Fabia) - not sure how I thought it was a Toyota. I was a bit surprised to say the least when it was showing 88mph as the average!!! I had thought it may have been low 80s and I was going to get a firm word, but when I saw that I realised it wasn't going to be just that.

As I expected, he gave me a Fixed Penalty Notice - £60 and a lovely three points! First time I've ever even been stopped by the Police, and first time I've ever had points for speeding - never even had a camera ticket. I did ask if there was any way it could be dealt with by just a caution (i.e.good ticking off) but the answer was no - apparently Sussex Police are having a crackdown on speed at the moment. He asked if I'd been in trouble with the Police before - I said no, not even a camera ticket!

What was annoying for me was firstly I'd only nipped out to dry the car off. Secondly, it was the initial section of the dual-carriage way where I got up to a speed I certainly hadn't intended, and this obviously attracted his attention - I don't know if I passed him or if he happened by chance to be behind me all the time from the roundabout - my bad luck either way. It was only a 1.5 mile stretch but I obviously clocked up most of the average in that very first section, and even though I then slowed down the average still ended up where it did. I don't know what the minimum distance is that they have to measure you over, but I'm sure I was measured over at least that distance.

Got to send off the payment within 28 days, and produce (i.e surrender) my license within 7 days. Takes about three weeks to be endorsed so should hopefully be back in time for Santa Pod. Even though the remainder of the FPN I have is my temporary driving license, I don't think Santa Pod would accept it. I'm sure they'll want to see the full Photocard and counterpart.

So, a nice start to the afternoon for me (happened at 1:30) Ah well, c'est la vie - my own fault at the end of the day and just rotten bad luck that the timing of my quick spin coincided with one of an unmarked car! I was genuinely surprised at the average I clocked up over that short section - I'll have to be much more careful in future with the extra horses I now have under my right foot!!

End of the day it doesn't have huge implications for me i.e. doesn't affect my job having the points being self-employed. Hopefully shouldn't affect any insurance renewal either as most places, I believe, allow for a couple of 'normal' speeding offences before they start to penalise you - but a little lesson learnt today!

lol, not really!! If I'd been tonking it and having some fun then the three points would have seemed more 'deserved' - it was just a quick spin up a 1.5 mile stretch of dual-carriageway to dry the car off. Simply didn't notice, until too late, what speed I was doing!
