Exclamation How Does Your Car Run When The Dpf Is Cleaning

    Hello All,

I have noticed when the DPF is cleaning idleing consumption goes up to .8/9 from .1 and runs rough as a tractor.

When driving though it is like a rocket ship

Anyone else have the same issues?

Does a light come on ? I have never noticed any signs that its running whilst driving along.
A few weeks ago whilst warming the car up after our holidays, There seemed to be a strange smell from the exhaust, Could this be the DPF cleaning its self.

I've never noticed anything either, are there certain veccys/signums that don't have a dpf? my understanding is its the more recent models.

You don't know it is doing it unless you look carefully. The light on the dash doesn't come on. Apparently that is for the european market not UK and I thought we were meant to be in Europe. Vx say you should not notice the DPF coming on.

Ok, DPF can come on at any point and the only way you would know is by the instaneous consumption value. The engine about 1 second before(this is on the V6 not 1.9) cuts in should give a very slight burst on the rev counter (about 200 revs)and you'll only notice it if you are aware of it. The 1.9 went through a recall recently(not all of them) for the DPF re-programing. They changed the programme to every 30 seconds I belive.

I am told the DPF should cut in at 80% but I can't get anyone at Vx to confirm this. If you are cruising and you instant mpg is 38 then as the DPF cuts in this would drop to 22ish until the regen is finished. The DPF has to heat up to 700C as a minimum to go through the regen stage so in order to do this, it increases the fuel and burns it to achive the temperature down at the CAT I think. If you were idle the consumption would be about 1.0. You can't always drive at speeed when it is on but it is advised that you do drive around 60ish.

DPF can cut in anywhere between 200 & 2000 miles depending on a large number of factors, fuel driving style etc.

I think mine is faulty(on my second one) as mine regens at 400 miles and lasts for 8 miles(motorway driving) and can almost set my clock by it. Vx deny they have changed the programming of the DPF but my last ECU update came direct from Japan(Izuzu). But who cares because about this one because Vx are gonna buy the car back.

Driving when the DPF is on should be sluggish/less responsive to the right foot.

I actually find mine to be like Mushy says ... when the DPF is regenerating it makes the car feel more responsive and the turbo sounds much louder ... the turbo seems to spool up very quickly (I suspect the turbo is already running a low RPM before I depress the throttle). I've often thought I wish I could get the DPF to run manually for the odd time you want the car to be more responsive (like a sport button ... certainly uses enough diesel for it to be in sport mode! )

you shouldn't get any smoke out of a DPF 'enabled' car ... when it's cleaning it does so by heating the DPF to around 600 degrees c which makes the particles 'evaporate'. I suspect you perhaps don't have a DPF but do have a right foot that weighs heavier at night?
