    Eek Uphill Race

Forgive me for being dumb or opening a can of worms but Are diesels better at tackling hills than petrols???

At the moment i own a 150 CDti and love the pull it has especially uphill ,it just keeps pulling up stupid hills in stupidly high gears. Are modern petrols the same? My last car was a Vec b Di so i have nt owned a petrol for a while or for that matter any modern petrol.I know petrol still wins hands down for quietness and smoothness but do they still struggle when the roads get steep?I must say i have no recent personal experience of this , just wandering. On a different note i like this

diesels produce more torque than their petrol counterparts, which means getting up hills is easier.

    here come the worms!!

lb for lb, petrols have to rev higher or be in a lower gear to produce the torque needed to propel the car as the loading gets higher. Turbo petrols produce more torque and lower down but obviously use more fuel as well.

My 1.8 struggles up some hills more than the 2.0DTI vec B I had, I never had to change down for some welsh hills in that.

Diesels produce more torque, at lower revs. This means that you generally can use a higher gear in an oily one than you would in a petrol car on the same hill (I think that makes sense......)
I really noticed the difference when I went to Spain recently. Hauling up the motorway that climbs into the Sierra Nevadas was a real effort, and I had to use 4th gear a lot in our hired Pug 307 1.6 petrol.
My car would have stayed in 6th all the way.

my vec B some times I have to drop it down a cog but my vec C up the same hill and no run up im still in 6th gear and pulling like a train
I love it when over taking up hill and the other driver's CDTi on the back (you've been done by a diesel) make's me chuckle
