    Default soot on engine cover

I was looking for my EGR control arm thingy (couldn't find it) and noticed soot on my engine cover.

Picture 1 shows the soot with my finger mark

Picture 2 shows the "thing" underneath the soot mark.

Is this normal and what is the thing shown.

    cheers

That "Thing" in your second picture is your EGR Valve, they do let out a bit of soot now and again, wouldnt worry about it unless you are getting driveability probs and engine management light on.
