Default What does the "air quality" setting on the climate do

Not a mod, but to save cloging up the general section, what does the Air Quality setting the Vectra's climate control actually do?

If the air quality sensor (situated in the engine bay) detects harmful fumes (I'm assuming exhaust gases if you're sat in traffic) then it automatically switches to recirculation mode.

Can't say I've ever noticed mine switch, even when I've had a load of fumes come through the vents into the cabin - I've had to switch to recirc manually.

supposed to auto recirculate if it detects high pollution levels in the incoming air. never seen it happen and i follow a smelly tractor to work most days.

    Makes sense.
I've never had it turned on with not knowing what it does, but why would you want to turn it off it turning it on is a good thing?

Works fine, but you'll notice that if there is a failure
some time ago I had a problem with the servo motor... I could here it clicking every time it opened or closed. In city traffic, traffic jams or in tunnels this happened every few minutes. It is activated even if you drive backwards with a cold engine.
Because of the ennoying noise I disabled the setting but then I could smell exhaust gasses in the car.
(by the way, the part was replaced under warranty; only a 15 min. job)

So when it activates the auto-recirc, is there any visual indication? i.e. is the recirc button meant to light up? (mine never has). Basically how do you know it's actually operating properly? Can you hear a servo kick in for example?

No there is no visual indication and like you, I had my doubts if it really worked. But as said, I saw (=heared) the difference when there was a problem with the valve. Once the problem was solved, I could not see any sign that indicates that it is working.
What I do know is that the air recirculation position makes more noise than normal air flow (on mine anyway). So if auto-recirc kicks in when the fan is turning at higher speeds, you probably could notice it.
