Default PC folks: Anyone managed to cure a dished IHS on an E6300 CPU?

I bought an Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 from a fella on another forum.

He warned me that it ran "hot", many of the C2D chips do having convex/concave Internal Heat Spreaders on them.

I've got it up and running now and in Speedfan, it reports both cores running at @44 deg C at idle.

TAT and CoreTemp both report it running at @57 deg C.

I've tried lapping it and its heatsink and its still running at pretty much the same temps.

Not really a problem as its stable at those temps although they are obviously way off as far as what it should be running at. I had Prime running overnight and it didnt go above 63 deg C but naturally I'm a bit concerned at the temps as far as the life of the CPU goes.

Its running at stock speed just now, although when I ran the Prime test, it was overclocked very slightly with a 300 FSB to 2.1Ghz.

Has anyone had a similar experience with a C2D and if so what did you do to lower the temps?.

The HSF I have on there just now is just a Coolermaster Hyper L3, not the best really, I had a Blue Orb II on it yesterday but it still ran at the same temps. It's been seated using Arctic Silver 5 as well. Air flow through my case ( its a monster, Chieftec Black Dragon ) is good.

I'm thinking of trying another cooler, any recommendations?.

As I said, it appears to be as stable as a rock, Prime ran fine and I sat and played BioShock last night for about 4 hours without any hassle or problems, just want to try and get the temps down a wee bit.

Cheers in advance for any advice.

I have one and it's cooler with the fan that Intel supplied tbh, 35 idle.

Aye, thats what annoys me about my CPU.

To be honest, the HSF I have on it just now is not that much better than the stock Intel one, but the temps are a bit high to say the least.

I bought the chip in order to overclock the thing up to around the 3.0Ghz mark and there's no way I'm going to manage that at this rate.

Its a good wee CPU as I said, it runs stable as hell, just hotter than normal.

I'm thinking I'm going to sell it for what it is at a cheap rate and grab another E6300 to o/clock as they seem to still be really good value/bang per buck for performance.

Just a pity this one didnt perform as I thought it may well do.

Can't you get water cooled HSF's now to reduce the temp even further?

also depends on ambient temp but iirc they are ok upto about 80 odd and if it s stable you ll be ok.They also have thermal protection whereas when they start to get too hot they run with decreased performance.

if you seriously want to over clock your cpu, water cooled is the the way to go, that's going to be one of the things i get after I've got the major bit's bought. here's a few

if you want performance and are considering getting another cpu, for about 150-170 you can get a awesome cpu and motherboard it's a 3 ghtz dual core to start with

Well, I've bought another E6300 from a fella on the OcUK forums in the Members Market for £45 inc del.

This one is running a damn sight cooler than mine is so I'm happy with that.

I'll sell on the hot running E6300 I have just now, obviously being truthful and telling any prospective buyer that it runs hot but is perfectly stable even with a mild overclock.

As I said, my mobo and RAM limits my o/clocking to 300FSB so next step is to look for another Socket 775 motherboard.

    Any recomendations?.

Also in the market for a new graphics card ( the wife is going to go nutz when she finds out how much I've spent on this stuff over the last week or two!!!! ).

    LOL...!!!

Nah m8, I've been an AMD fan for a good while now, before I defected over to Intel and got the E6300 I had been using an XP3000 Barton CPU and it was a cracking little bit of kit.

For "bang per buck" the E6300 is really hard to beat, especially as it can be clocked up to over 3.0Ghz.

I still have the 3000 Barton and Gigabyte GA7N400-L mobo, its going in the wifes PC to replace her ancient PIII450 setup.
