    Default priming dti fuel system

    Hi all,

Has anyone any pointers as to how I prime a dti fuel system?
I've placed a 'help' thread ref running problems (See Poorly dti - desparate man) and have identified that the fuel filter case seems to run out of fuel hence the juddering and up/down/up/down revs.
I've filled it up and it ran better for a while only to start again but not quite so bad as before. Pulled the filter assembly apart and found hardly any diesel in it! Blasted the supply line with compressed air to blast out any Cr*p and reassembled it. Will not start because it will not pull any fuel through - are there any tricks or will filling the filter case up alone do the trick - because it hasn't so far!

with the DTi the filter housing MUST be filled with diesel before attempting to start the engine.

Cant remember if they have a primary pump in the tank to push fuel up to the filter housing though??

Mr GSi may know for sure

what you need is the priming bulb tool... it clips in between the filter and the fuel line and working the bulb lets you draw up fuel from the tank into the filter bowl and prime the system..unlike the CDTi they do not self prime and need quite a bit of help...tool avaliable from www.sealey.co.uk..

Can you answer this for me?
Why when I filled the filter case up and ran it today did it continue after about 8 - 10 miles start playing up as described under Poorly DTI? When I undid the drain screw nothin drained out, infact it sucked air IN hence why I stripped it. Thinking there was some cr*p in the line I blew it through with an airline. Sucked the fuel through (diesel tasted better than petrol if you need to know anytime?) but in just runs back to the tank - why as this will introduce an airlock in the line surely?
    I'm confused!

Have you got a part number because I've just had a quick look and can't find it?

you could have some 'cornflake' in the tank that it is sucking up.... only a whole tank flush will prove/disprove this and that is a last resort as it isn't cheap....the vacumn worrys me, as it shouldn't generate one at all..

i'll see if i can find that tool on their site for you .. back in a while..

On the nothing draining out.. You have to release the torx screw on the housing a tad so it can breathe and then u should see diesel flow from the bottom. I know this is 100% correct as i did this the other week.. I went to drain out the water but nothing happened until i cracked open the top.. Also states this in a manual somewhere too.

Just out of interest, when I syphoned some fuel out of the tank to fill the filter case there was some water in the jar after I'd done it! The jar was clean and dry when I started.
This doesn't answer the vacuum though so I'm mystified? The up/down/up/down revs could be assumed to be the pump struggling to pull fuel through if there isn't enough fuel coming through. Had a Fraud Escort years ago that was a diesel and it had a pump on the side of the filter case to do exactly what you have suggested. Why can't Vauxhall do the same?

When I released the drain plug it gargled and belched as if the fuel was being pulled down the fuel line back to the tank. I was amazed as the filler cap was loosly applied just in case the breather hole was blocked?
