Default All that lovely air !!!!

For some reason Vauxhall put a blanking plate behind the grill on a 1.9 CDTi engine which prevents ANY air getting through. Therefore the only air getting in is from the very top (just under the bonnet lid, and the very bottom)...

Well not now.... look what I've gone and done.... cut it all out !!!

Oooooops.... how did this photo get in here......

Is that not to make sure no water gets into the air intake? - bad news for a diesel.

Good point.... dunno... doesnt the 3.0 CDTi have the same problem then ?

EDIT:: Dont Watercoolers squirt water into diesel combustion chambers to improve performance on trucks ???.... I'm not saying thats what I intended lol... but how can it be that bad ?

I believed all the diesels had a blanking bit on the grille over where the air intake is - to stop water getting in. The petrols are open grilles. Must admit, I've never seen one like that where it's totally blocked up!!

Wouldn't think that would really be a problem, it's the rad/intake area that it's all going to hit first. On the petrol models the grilles are not blanked off so it can't be an issue.

This is a good point though Duncan and I'm amazed it hasnt been raised before... but anyway, I would like to get to the bottom of this question thats for sure

I think water injection is just a mist/spray, the flap is to stop hydraulic lock where a large amount of water is sucked in and essentially water cant be compressed so the piston head hits a solid force and boom! It happened to my old mans 407 hdi. Petrol's work on a lot lower compression so there is less risk of damage. Also as you have a turbo you are actually sucking air in so this makes the risk higher. You can buy a connection/valve thing that goes in your intake to stop hydraulic lock, I have only seen it in the states.
