    Default Standard Charges for Repairs/Services

    Hi Guys

    New to the forum.

Is there any sites holding information on what I should expect to pay for servicing, repairs etc?

I have just had 40K service plus brakes changed all round and it cost £560. Is that reasonable or did they see me comming?

    Thanks in advance

    Daz

Yikes!, sounds somewhat expensive!! Have you got the breakdown of cost i.e. what the service was and what the brakes were? Was it discs and pads on all four wheels?

Wish it was an aston Martin, a nice DB9 would suit me down to the ground!

Not got the details on me but it was about £180 for the service and the rest for the brakes.

It was discs and pads on all four wheels.

I assumed that the discs would last a lot longer than 40K though.

Also Just been told a friend is being charged £420 at the same garage to change the altenator (04 model) , again sounds expensive.

Doesn't sound just expensive to me, sounds like a complete rip off. What brakes did they use, gold plated ones??

Pads would be about £50 all round (based on me buying Mintex for £25 for the rear at about 65Kmiles), and I really can't see the disks a, needing changing after so few miles or b, costing that much.
Next time, shop around and ask on here first. We are a helpful bunch.

I'd go somewhere else next time, was it a VX dealer??

Yes it was a VX garage but the car is out of warranty at the end of the month so will be looking elsewhere in future.

Will advise the friend to look around, any suggestions for a reputable and reasonably priced garage in Stockport/South Manchester?

    Cheers

    £560?

For certain, brake pads & discs cost around £50 for an AXLE set, regardless of size. So, £180 for the service which is steep, but about right for a main dealer, then £100 ish for your pads & discs leaves a whopping £280 for labour!

Any mechanic who's been doing the job more than about 5 minutes should be able to replace all 4 sets of brakes in about an hour and a half - say 2 hours to allow for incompetency

Not bad for their profit margins, charging £140 an hour for labour!

That sounds about right for a service, front brake pads, rear brake pads, front discs, and rear discs
Each set of discs will be about £80, each set of pads about £30, so that's £220, plus about 1.5 hours labour at say about £80
    That's £480 so far

How about a break down of the invoice, as it should list :
    service labour
    parts labour
    service parts
    brake parts

As documented in many threads already, Vauxhall recently rationalised ALL their brake prices - it now costs exactly the same for an axle set of pads and discs, whatever size, and its around £60 per axle set - if you do a search you'll find the exact figure.

Yep, but don't forget that's for punters who ask for the disc and pad set over the parts counter. For a service they'll, I'd expect, use the separate discs and pads which come in a helluva lot more expensive and probably why the overall cost was so much. Something like £120 for a set of front discs, so combine that with the rear discs and labour I can actually see how they've got to that figure. Still an outrageous cost, but I bet you if you got a service and all pads and discs changed at any Vx dealer you'd be looking at a similar cost. One reason why I do as much on my car as I can.
