Default Help Urgently Required... I've F*cked up!!!

I am doing a bot of work for a mate of mine, and he pays me via direct bank transfer from his Lloyds TSB aaccount to mine.

Well, the first payment never went in, so he paid me cash, so i went to the bank today, and lo and behold the second one hadnt gone in either. So i phoned him with all guns blazing and "where the f*ck is my money". We checked the bank details and i have given him the wrong details!

Basically i have given him my name, my Lloyds TSB account number, but MY OLD Halifax Sort Code . SO the money has been transferred to an account that isnt mine, but because it was done via bank transfer, and not BACS/CHAPS we are struggling to get my money back, and he is saying that as far as he is concerned he has paid me, which technically he has. How can i get my money back!!!

Its the best part of £1000 as well, so its not pocket change!

I'd contact the Halifax branch direct and explain the situation.

Have tried that, but all they are saying is, "You need to contact Lloyds TSB", and guess what Lloyds TSB are saying...... "You really need to talk to The Halifax about this matter".

You're best bet is to get your friend to contact his bank, explain and attempt to recall the payment - at the end of they day the transaction was made by him so there is nothing you can do about this.

He is trying now, but at the moment struggling to make it happen.

Does anyone know how bank account numbers work??

Do different banks have different numbering systems so mistakes like this cannot happen.

    EG...

If Lloyds have an Account Number 12345678 and sort code 12-34-56

Would Halifax have an account number 12345678 with a different sort code??

I seem to recall someone telling me not so long back that different banks have different sets of account numbers, EG all LLoyds will start 10, all halifax will start 00, all HSBC will start 21 etc etc.

The bank accounts tend to be mixed up - its the sort codes that tell you which bank it is:

So for example Barclays Bank uses 20 followed by another two digit number for the group number and then another two digit number for the branch.

Abbey on the other hand only used one sort code for everything (09:01:26).

You can find them all here:

The money will be in a holding account at the moment , it will get returned to you when they figure out a mistake has been made when the sort/account don`t tie up . Don`t worry it will not get lost ...

If he phones up his bank that made the transfer they will sort it out and pay him back that money because it wont get transfer anywhere because the sortcode and account number will be invaild . It might even bounce back to his account after three or five days . To be fair his bank should have told him that the details you given him were invaid in the first place .

I've had this in the past. The money leaves one account but doesn't make to the other because the details don't match up. the money is held in a holding account and usually returned to the original account after 5 working days IIRC
