Default Bought a new boost gauge at Trax - now fitted

Fitted a BSR one some time back and was happy enough with the gauge (should be after all the hassle it involved!!) but was never happy with the way it looked. Being a mechanical one - i.e. the tubing goes into the gauge itself where the pressure diaphragm is - it made it fairly deep so it was difficult to find suitable mounting options. Settled with a pod mount which was basically the best option.....

As you can see I had to route the boost pressure tubing into the dash, that itself caused problems as it kept trying to turn the pod due to the stiffness of the tube. I didn't want it too far forward as my iPAQ (for SatNav) would have obstructed it, plus it would have made the tubing even more visible.

So, at Trax on Sunday I found a place that just did gauges and came across one that fitted the bill perfectly. It's an electronic gauge, with a stepper motor for the dial for smoother movement. The sensor diaphragm is a separate unit that stays on the engine side and all that comes into the cabin is the wiring - so no tube to feed up through the dash and it means the gauge is a good bit shallower as well - much easier to accommodate on the dash.

So today I went and wired it in - wipers off, scuttle panel off to access the hole in the bulkhead into the cabin for the cables - and took the opportunity to tidy up the wiring for the TomTom GPS (so that I could move it a little bit to the side and make it easier to get the unit in and out of the cradle. Also turned the feed to the iPAQ cradle into a permanent live as I'd had it as ignition feed - decided that a permanent feed was better as I could still charge the iPAQ with the ignition off.

The gauge came with everything you needed to fit it, including the neat pod mount and nice flat stand. So, here's the gauge fitted and you can see it's a neater fit and the GPS is now moved slightly....

The gauge has a neat feature where it's dark when the ignition is off.....

...and lights up when ignition turned on.

    An animated version......

    Couple of night shots.

It also has a neat start-up sequence, which is also a calibration sequence, when you turn on the ignition. Videos below (click on pic to link to video)......

    Start-up

    Shut down

You also have the option of changing the display colour between red and white - either set to always red or always white or change between them depending if the lights are turned on or not. After trying them out I stuck with white all the time as I drive with my lights on during the day so red would be harder to see during the day.

Lastly!, it also has an alarm function where you can set a limit and if it reaches that will trigger an alarm and the display will flash between red and white. May have a use, but the car should automatically drop the turbo into 'safe mode' if the pressure becomes higher than it should be.

So, all in all happy with how it looks and performs. Went for a drive and it's giving the same readings as the last one, and they were what they should be.

    D

I had 3 auto gauges in the Golf, very good and as you said turn the engine off and face goes dark. Bit like cheaper version of deffy gauges.

    Looks good though D
