Default Increasing the exhaust bore - advice please

    Hi all,

as I am considering replacing my exhaust with a powerflow system I was wondering whether it is worth having a larger bore exhaust system over the standard.

I have been led to believe that this will help with any engine mods in the future, which I am still contemplating, cams and re-map for instance.

Has anyone increased the bore of their exhaust, has it helped?

One of my main concerns is the sound though, don't want to make it too loud .

If I were to increase it, I would probably only go to 2 1/4", as opposed to 2 1/2" as I have been advised this would be loud indeed.

    Any advice or comments welcomed!!

    Cheers guys

    Dave

Not too sure about the bore size, but i am getting one made from MIJ Peformance Exhausts in Walsall, the same place as Spoons had his done. Have emailed loads of places, and have heard horror stories about Powerflow from quite a few people TBH, enough to put me off hem anyway.

I believe when they make your exhaust, you can ave it as quiet of as loud as you like, its completely your choice.

This is the email they sent me for mine, and it states a line about the noise...

    Dear Mr Mitchell
'AWARD WINNERS OF CUSTOMER CARE 2005'

This is Jay from MIJ Performance Walsall

    Thank you for your enquiry.

The cat-back stainless steel exhaust system you've requested for your Vectra 2.2dti will cost only £274.99 this is fully inclusive of fuel discount (£25), vat & fitting.
I've included a round chrome polished tailpipe in the quotation, you can choose an alternative or upgrade from our extensive range of 40 tailpipes if you wish.
View some of the work we have done on your make/model, www.mijperformance.com/exhaust.html - This should give you an idea of our quality of work & also help
you to decide what type of style & look your after.

We carry all the necessary parts needed to build your exhaust system instore, so it should take no longer than 2 - 3 hrs to build & fit the system.
If you choose to wait with your car, we have a customer lounge with refreshments, SKY TV/DVD & internet access. We're only a few minutes walk from the city centre if you decide to go shopping etc. while we work on your car.

As your system will be custom built, you can tell us how you would like it sound, anywhere from quiet to full sport. Our most popular choice is a Mid-Sport, this gives the best of both worlds, not intrusive but achieves the sporty sound you want from your car upon applying the throttle.

If you do have any further queries with the details i've provided or you would like to go ahead and make a booking, then please call me on 01922 645 646 or reply back by email.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Best Regards,

    Jay

I have got to be honest, I have heard a lot of good things about MIJ, the only thing which has put me off is that I don't think they can do the tailpipe I want, the vxr style pipes.

OK, just had another look at MIJ's website, although it doesn't show the exhaust pipe I want on the link of tailpipes, it does have it on the images on the header of the webpage, so think its best to contact them and ask them.

    Keep the comments coming guys...

when i fitted payneys new pipes i left as much of the 60mm bore on as i could and it's done his car no harm whatsoever....A proper exhaust centre will know to leave you with the correct back pressure ( as you have a non turbo car) so that it still runs okay....and thats with an increase from 42mm to 60mm..

Cheers mate, so the 60mm is the 2 1/2", is it loud or ok (enter Payney...)

I have found the following information regarding bore sizes and planned power:

2" is good for upto 160 bhp
    2.25" for 160-180 bhp
2.5" 180 bhp+ [the maximum diameter a na engine should be fitted with, you should have a ported head, cams etc]
    3" forced induction only

Still waiting on the reply from MIJ.

i read that over a 2 litre 3" and high flow cat will give the best results( also a high flow filter pannel or cone)

if the bore on your exhaust is too big you wont have enough back pressure and u will loose power and if an exhuast place is making you up and exhaust custom they have ratings between 1 and 10 of loudness so u can choose how loud or not you want it the powerflow exhausts i have seen have been quite good well made but then thaats down to the craftsman doing the job too but i did hear a rumour u have to take them back once a year to get them checked for lifetime gaurentee purposes
