Have you tried removing it to see if everything is normal without it fitted

Mine gives a cloud of smoke if I boot it from low revs (around 1500, before the turbo cuts in, but that was the same with my previous box) & at high speeds (over 120) it gives out some smoke otherwise it seems fine

Mine's still smokeless (say smokeless, I can't see any in my mirrors, but I think nearly all diesels give at least a tiny puff of grey smoke when booting hard).
Did you do the airbox mod / chuck a K&N in there? I think you're bound to get some smoke if you have altered the airbox.
edit: if the power has gone, i'd definitely take it off as suggested above, and see how it goes. It does sound like something has developed a fault there unfortunately.. no power & lots of black smoke could be a turbo problem or something

Ive taken the box off and the car runs fine without even a trace of smoke. I havnt done the airbox mod coz I dont know what to do.
I have also noticed that sometimes the performance is really good, and othertimes its as if the box has been disconnected. I had no probs until I had a new EGR valve fitted (warranty repair). Im wondering if this has thrown the box out of calibration. Im wondering if I can re-set it.

I had what sounds like the same problem. It was the swirl valve on the car & nothing to do with the box.

I had a CR1 box & noticed when I booted it large trails of smoke were starting to be left as the revs built.

Also, although I didn't notice it the car was getting less powerful day by day as well.

One day it would feel ok, another quite sluggish, I thought it was a bit wierd but normal. When you drive it every day you don't notice how bad it is.

I followed another member from here with the same engine & box to a meet, & couldn't even come close to keeping up.

Thats when I realised there was something definitely not right.

I booked the car in, & was shocked at the difference when I got it back.

It was way more powerful, even without a box on!

Cheers for reply. The car does seem fine without the box on though. I got my mate to drive it yesterday whilst I followed and the smoke is evident when excellerating from low revs, then it clears till about 3500 revs. At first it was quite thick black smoke but after a few minutes (whilst pushing) it started to clear a little as if it was just burning off some muck in the engine. I dont race around so im wondering if thats partly the problem.

Could be right about the box being confused about the new EGR. Might be worth a try to leave the car idling for a few minutes when replugging the box in - like it says to do when you get the spider new. Remember not to touch the throttle during this time at all so the box can learn the new setup. Best to fire off an email to the spiderman himself to ask about this, he'll surely know.
I don't think it matters that you don't drive hard with these boxes (I don't either), and it automatically switches to its "ecomony" map for quiet driving so no worries there.

Thanks for that I did the air box mod ages ago, didn't realise it would cause more smoke or I would have left well alone. I emptied the air box of its hoovered up debris tonight & put the plastic bit back in place, took the car out for a blast & hardly any smoke (& I was giving it some stick), it did seem a little down power (but only a tiny fraction & it was a lot queiter too) still rocketed well into instant ban territory & beyond.

So would K&N filters & the like also cause the diesel to smoke more?

K&N in the standard airbox probably doesn’t let much extra air through compared to the modified one, so shouldn’t be a big deal. But, K&N + unrestricted airbox will obviously increase induction quite a lot; I personally think you’d need to have the ecu remapped to prevent fueling/smoke issues with all that extra air going through. Of course, those with the DPF will never see any extra smoke. And again, all cars are different - I'm sure some people will say they don't get any smoke (even with no dpf) after pulling the airbox apart.

One thing I’ve been using the last month or two with my spider is a fuel treatment – Millers Sport 4, and it’s definitely giving a bit more power + 20miles per tank on this car with no side effects. Seriously, I swear by the stuff.
