Rear Brake squeal.

Hi all,

The Veccy just failed its MOT on the rear pads. Had them changed then drove 20 miles on the motorway. Came off the slip road and hit the brakes and was presented with a large white cloud of smoke from the back wheels! Seems the pads had jammed on. Got it back to the garage who kept it overnight...seemingly some kind of piston problem which they sorted out.
Ive had it back for 20 mins now and im hearing an intermittant squealing sound at low speed. Also, the discs front and back are extremely hot to the touch...is this normal after 20mins driving?

The heat depends on how you drive it. It sounds like the caliper siezed on. I'd go back and ask their advice. Brakes do run hot, so it all depends how you drive it.

The brakes will warm up very quickly indeed and will get very hot the squealing could be a couple of things if its the rears that are noisey a couple of causes i have found 1st a small amount of copper slip where they touch the caliper can quieten them down also have the garage that fitted them connected the inside rear pad to the piston correctly as i have found this can make them squeal under light braking and coasting to a stop HTH

Did the garage fit original Vauxhall pads? There have been issues with aftermarket pads squealing.

Hi, just to mention when any sort of seizing of calipers occurs, ive found 6/10 times that its due to faulty brake hoses i.e. they can colapse internally so when u apply pressure it works fine.
But when releasing pressure the brake hose dosent i.e. the pads are in constant contact with discs, heat travels to the caliper and heat seizes caliper.....

in all my years in the game, i've only ever had a problem with collapsed hoses on a couple of occasions.. normally showing up as a brake Bias problem..

the usual cause for seizing calipers is brake dust crud in the pad slides and caliper slides, restricting the movement of the pad and caliper..hence why any decent garage would clean the seats and contact faces off first before even trying to refit a new set of pads to ensure that they can move..
