    Default New car

Have ordered my new car 2 weeks ago to replace my hand me down. and was just wondering if anyone had fitted one of these !

    http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/stock01/kosa200.asp

i was thinking of using the usb part, as you can pick up usb hard drives cheap, and you can hide it in the car without having to remove it everytime you leave the car like an ipod. and if it does get nicked its £30 gone instead of a £200 ipod

Anyone feel free to correct me here, but I don't think a bare HD is going to work, for one you will need to power the HD which will be expecting a mains supply not a car one, no doubt there is a way to convert the power source to the correct one but it will mean another unit etc, and how will you select tracks if there's no suitable O/S on the HD.

Most of the slim line drives power from the usb port and the kenwood unit is supposed to read mp3 files, failing that i can just use an 8gb memory stick, which is still cheaper than an 8gb ipod. I think thats the way the usb port on these devices work but i dont know anyone who's got one.

The 2.5" drives are usually powered by a USB port, however sometimes laptops can't provide enough power from a single USB port so have to have additional power - the 2.5" drive I carry around has an additional USB plug on its cable to plug into another USB port to provide the extra power.

Therefore you may or may not find that the HU can provide enough power to it.

As long as the drive is formatted and arranged in a way that the HU can understand it (probably FAT32) there should be no difference between a 2.5" drive and a USB stick - unless the HU can only see up to a maximum size (ie 8GB).

Best to check through the owners manual to check on the specs.

hard drives will be low voltage not mains, PC's only have 12v & 5v supplies from the PSU. i'd go with the memory stick
