Default Any clever ipod bods on here? or electrical minded people

I had a think about a hard disk mp3 storage subject the other day. last week I bought a pioneer headunit the one which is capable of controling an ipod. of course sods law means the day after i buy it my ipod hard drive dies. this got me thinking. looking on ebay you can buy hard drives and plugs and everything else needed to fix an ipod diy style. I got my thinking cap on and am curious now. thinking i wonder if I buy a 60gb hard drive and put itunes on it. and I buy the connections also available on ebay. Would I be able to just plug it in to my headunit. the headunit also charges the ipod at the same time so no reason for a battery?? am I write in thinking this, i wont need a screen as the ipod is controled on the headunit anyway. If this is possible I could have a 60gb music keg installed behind the dashboard somewhere accessible of course. but i wouldnt need to carry an ipod about with me when I leave the car?
Any opinions/ suggestions/obvious problems out there?

please feel free to help out

    thanks

You know there is a little trick with HD's, you need to rough it up a bit, twist it,bang it, even hurl it across the room within reason, it won't always work, but it has been known to get em going again, hth.

hhhmmmm worth a try I took the ipod into the local apple dealership. the lad took it put it next to his ear and said 180 quid to fix. once the ambulance crew had bought me back round I said no thanks and proceeded to be on my merry way! looked on ebay 35 quid for replacement drive and its a diy job just takes a little patience and a bit of time. The time I have, the patience I am still looking round the house for. Usually cause I loose it went doing just about anything.

    we'll see how it goes

its easy to replace the hard drive mate, the hardest part is gettin the casing open.
once ure in, all u have to do is unplug old one, swap over the rubber bits, and plug in new drive.
then u just need to get the ipod software on it.

Funny that, was reading the warranty label on one of the dozen or so HD's in my van and it says it's void if exerted beyond 350 G's!!!
