Thats more than the average. Anything over 5 years is considered reasonable these days.
the problem with the offence is that they had no intention of killing some one.
Yes, they knew it was dangerous but didn't have the premeditated intention of killing some-one on the road. Thus it is not treated as serious as murder but something similar to manslaugther (where you can get a conditional discharge for this offence to life imprisonment).
