    Default Mobile speed traps

We were on the A515 from Lichfield heading towards Utoxeter, In a small village of Kings Bromley, the speed limit was 30, parked on the grass up against a hedge on a bend was a police motorbike with a speed gun faceing the oncoming traffic, the traffic was doing about 30/33 mph, I have never seen a speed camera on a police bike but have heard of it before on this site and in the paper, there were no other police vehcals about, in fact there was not even a policeman by the bike nor camera, so I don,t know if it was "working" or just there as a deterent.
When we got to Utoxeter I mentioned it to the owner of the warehouse we went to, he said that was unusual for round here, but went on to tell us an amusing story, I don,t know how true it was but it did make me smile, He said there was an airbase in Lincoln I think, where Tornadoes were based, well the police decided to put a radar gun on the road under were the planes landed. Whilst useing the gun to chatch speeding motorists. A Tornado came into land, the planes radar picked up that some one " the ememy" was using a radar in the vicinity of the plane, the planes defence system automaticlly sent out a sort of jamming /laser/microwave signal to the radar source and it blew up the radar gun and all the equipment with it, As I say I don,t know if it was actually true, but if it was I bet the policeman had the supprise of his life.

Nearly true. This is an old one from my RAF Apprenticeship days when it featured in RAF news.

It was a Harrier in Scotland. The Chief Constable rang the local base to complain they had bust his radar. They pointed out that they were lucky the harrier was not been armed as it automatically fires on such targets.
Needless to say the chief let it lie.

It's not possible for the equipment to have been damaged in that way, but the story is sort of true. The daily mail i think it was, around 9 yrs ago ran a story that tornado's from lossiemouth locked onto police radar on the A9 and wanted to launch counter measures.

I heard a story about the Sultan of Brunei private plane.

Whilst bored a traffic officer in London decided to try and get the speed of the passing overhead private jet. He aimed his laser at the plane and pressed the trigger. Suddenly the jet veered off at a rate of knots into the distance.

When he got back to the garage, all hell had broken loose. Apparently the laser had activated the defense systems on the plane triggering the onboard missles to lock on the laser source. A quick thinking pilot had disarmed the system thinking the chances of a Sam missle attack in London was slim. Taking no chances he shot off into the distance.

Even to this day all Traffic officers are wary of "pinging" passing planes.

    Apparently it is true.

The RADAR systems fitted to military aircraft will not automatically fire off chaff/flare (countermeasures) unless the police speed trap locks on. From my understanding, correct me if im wrong, the police radar use the pulse doppler effect to judge the speed of a moving vehicle, therefore not actually locking on. The aircrafts radar will only pick it up as an unknown source from the ground, and not automatically fire.

With regards to 'blowing up' the speed gun, this would not happen, however the aircraft can jam the frequency used by the speed gun, rendering it useless.

of course i may be wrong, but i do fix radar....lol

This is the same story that I've heard. Traffic officers tried to catch the speed of a Harrier on a training sortee. The Radar counter measures automatically sprung into action and fried the radar gun.

It's a good job the Harrier wasn't in full attack mode otherwise it would of fired chaf, flares and maybe have sent a missile their way. They were lucky they only got away with a broken radar gun.

    Uttoxeter.....warehouse....?

It's not big enough for a warehouse, it's taken them about 400 years to get a Tesco and a cinema!

I'm allowed to say that, I went to school there - and the ex-in-laws live there still

Gotta dought that one John...I had a call out to Brunei last year. When we landed, the Sultans jet was parked on the tarmac. It looked like a commercial jet to me..No missile pylons or the like.

What was interesting is that big jets like 747s were banned from the airport because "the runway is too short".

What was his plane? A 747! The Brunes seamed a little obsessed with image so I guess they did not want any planes in the airfield that were as big as his.
