Default Car starting to use oil, should it still be flushed ??

    Bit of a strange title

My Vectra is due it's fourth service now, it's a 2003 1.8 with 61k miles on it.

On all the services it's had the engine and fuel flushes done but i'm not sure whether to have the engine flush done this time because it's starting to use oil.

It's using about 300ml of oil every 1000 miles which is about half of what VX say is ok in the handbook, its gradually started to use some over the last 20k miles or so.

I'm just at bit worried that flushing the engine could remove any build up in the oil wells which could be "plugging up" any potential oil problems. I hope that makes sense

There's no leaks and it doesn't smoke on start up. It tends to burn a bit off over a long run, say a 300-400 mile motorway drive.

    Any ideas guys ?!

I have never been too keen on engine flush,s, I think it is better to change the oil on a regular basis, I change my fully synthetic oil at 10,000 miles, I am under the impresion that if the engine flush can remove oil deposits it is undemining the proporties of the oil when it is "flushing" the engine, Just my opinion though.

if you change your oil on a regular basis you don't need to flush. Just do the oil change

my old 1.8 used at least 1ltr per 1000 motorway miles. Did so from about 45K.

I`m more inclined to Ed`s idea....I prefere to change the oil "sooner" and just do flushes every now an then......remeber that a good oil and in good contion is vital for a healthy engine

I always was under the impression that if the car had been flushed at oil changes/regularly then it was best to keep doing that. From what Mark (GSi3.2) has said in the past I thought the worst thing to do was not do flushes and then do one now and again as that can dislodge the bigger bits of crud that have collected over time and cause them to then flow into areas where they can cause problems.

Mine has had flushes at each service and I also do it at the interim oil change.

With regards to your question simac, if you've been flushing regularly I wouldn't think it'd be a problem to continue doing so - I don't think it will be related to your oil consumption 'problem' You're well within the limits specified by VX and it could simply be a sign of the engine just getting that bit older/higher mileage.

Thanks for the replies, I am thinking of just carrying on with the flushes as it's always had them.

The oil consumption has gradually increased which I think is just wear and tear. Just wanted to see what the general consensus was about the flushing etc

The best Way to do Oil changes is when the the Engine is in normal Operating Temperature (also hot) If You drain it than you will get most of the Sludge and Debris out,and leave it dripping for about 1/2 Hour as the the hot Oil is fairly thin before refilling The Engine should be than nearly cold.
All VX Cars use a bit Oil as long as I can remember even back to the 1950.tees,if they dont use anything You start to worry. That bit what Yours use is within the Guidlines and nothing to worry about.
