Default 2.2 DTi 2003 Timing chain.

Mrs thinking of getting timing chain changed as recently a guy she works with warned her of someone he knew who's belt / chain (not sure which) snapped at just 60k miles. She's now a bit paranoid and is wanting to get the chain on hers changed.

Dealer has quoted about £133 - £150 for the chain (including trade club discount). This seems a tad high ?? Her car has quite high mileage at 120k, and I can't see anywhere in the sh that says it's been changed before.

What kind of money would a garage be charging to change the chain on one of these ?

    Cheers.

TBH a timing chain should never need changing unless it starts getting noisy/rattling. A belt yes, definately change it, but not a chain.

...this is something I am pondering too. I have a 2003 SRI 2.2DTi thats done 41k. Im told by the dealer it is 80k for a replacement, yet some say 40k?

I can understand why people get a bit paranoid!

The 2.2 DTi's, and the 2.2 petrols for that matter are chain driven. Unless the chain is rattling, it is maintenance free. There's no mention in the service schedule of a lifespan for it, so unless it's making a rattle, don't worry about it.

...so its a 'timing chain' as apposed to belt? (excuse my woeful lack of under-the-bonnet knowledge!)

    Yep.

Also known as Cam belt. The Timing chain is what the DTi has instead of the belt.

Does Vx give any indication of what mileage it should be changed at..?

No. There is no replacement schedule or details in the service booklet. It should last the lifetime of the car. The only time it may need doing is if you can hear it rattling. But if that's happening, then I'd suggest that there would be an underlying problem like an oil jet that lubricates the chain system becoming blocked.

So, if it's making a noise, get it checked out, possible it may need replacing, along with the oil jet.

If it's not making any noise, Happy days, that's how it should be.

    Really is that simple!

I think your missus' guy at work is thinking about the whole 2.2 petrol engine timing chain issue from yonks ago.

There should be no reason to replace the chain on a DTi - if the chain is knackered then you'll probably have other things to worry about first.
