    Default Food for thought.

Just watching 'The secret life of the motorway' on one of the Digital channels.

When the M1 was built in the 50's, they managed to build, from scratch, one mile every eight days.

So why nowadays, does it take four years to widen the M25?

I thought we were more efficient these days?

Reminds me of the old story about Brunel converting the railways from the old narrow gauge to the current size. The Great west line from London to Bristol I think it was, was changed in one night!!

Takes longer judging by some motorways and the time it takes to widen them .

Well I can give you a sort of explanation, when cable tv was being installed in the town some 15 yrs ago for what is now NTL, a firm used to employ guys to lay the cables, this was a process of either the pavement coming up or the road, they were paid by the job, so you got £2000 per road no matter how long it took, and I kid you not they would lay a road in a day, now here's the opp side of it, a road recently needed new cabling, the same firm did the job and the road was up for 4 days and it wasn't as long as the ones done in a day.

Go to Portugal and they will have a motorway built overnight, and why? because they manpower it properly and pay the rate for an attended job rather than a lower rate to send the lads in when there's nothing else to do that day.

And why doesn't Prince Phillip run for PM? it'd be awesome with him in charge, new laws on just about everything, and have Prince Harry in charge of diplomacy.

Not forgetting the M25 is in use 24hrs making in non too easy to work on or close.. its taken almost 2 years just to refurb the holmsdale tunnels at enfield, w hich has had a 40mph limit for just as long.. I hate & avoid the M25 unless its either early morning around 4.30 to 5.30am or after 10pm.
