Default There's only one problem with an automatic...

My pet hate is people who hit the brake, then keep the brake pedal down until the car is stationary. NO! Release the brake just before you stop - I'm sick to búggery of making love to your f*cking dashboard.

However, in an auto, this isn't quite as easy, as easing off the brake as you come to a halt will just cause the car to take off again. Any suggestions?

Na don't coast an auto, you probably wont damage it, but an auto should be in drive until it stops tbh. hth

Learn to use the brake properly and feel for when its going to stop - if its coming to a sharp stop then most likely they aren't reading the road properly and are braking too hard anyway!

That doesn't really help. I'm not talking about harsh braking - I'm talking about releasing it a microsecond before it stops so you don't get the jolt. If you do this on an automatic it starts accelerating again.

Not an issue with my new BMW 5 series as it has something called soft stop. It also has hill start assist which is quite cool - holds the brake until you physically start to move forward!!

I've driven a few auto's (and I've had a Volvo 940SE 2.0HPT estate with the old 3 speed auto box as a company car) and I've not really noticed a jolt when you come to rest?! I just release a bit of brake pressure before it comes to a total stop - you soon get used to it.
