Angry Should I send a letter to the dealer....?

This is likely something I have touched upon in other postings I've made but it's been playing on my mind now for a few weeks. I thought I'd detail the situation to see what everyone thinks.

I bought my Vectra (SRi on a 53 plate) from a Skoda dealership in Leeds approximately a little over one month ago.

My first visit to the dealership was on saturday the 14th July. I viewed the car, and took it for a test drive. I am almost certain in the back of my mind that the car had just over 36,500 miles on it at the time, as I phoned a friend to tell them about it and remember telling them.

I took delivery of the car from them, or rather picked it up, on friday July 20th. During the six days the vehicle was in the dealership, it underwent a service and MOT.

I was rather happy at finally picking up the car, and it wasn't until a day or so later that I looked at the mileage and thought "Hang on, something odd is going on here...", as it had over 39'000 miles on it... and it tipped over onto 40'000 in no time at all.

I thought perhaps my mind was playing tricks on me, but in the following weeks I recieved the warranty information from Skoda, which listed the 'starting mileage' at 36,633 or thereabouts. I compared this with the MOT certificate, upon which was listed 39,6xx (can't be exact as I'm at work at the moment)

A quick calculation reveals an additional 3500 miles exactly.

Now this purplexes me somewhat, as I'd have thought that no-one with the best will in the world could put 3'500 miles on a vehicle in the space of six days, which lead me on to thinking has the odometer been altered...

Now the gentleman that sold me the car went on holiday for two weeks on the day I collected the car, and he said normally he would have called me within a week to see if I was happy with the car, but as he was on holiday obviously he couldn't. I expected a call in the following weeks after his return, but as yet , nothing.

I got the standard letter from the garage, you know the old "Thankyou for buying from us...welcome to the family" thing from the dealership manager.

Now I'm considering writing back with this evidence and asking for an explanation.

    Any thoughts or ideas anyone?

Have you simply rung them and asked why the discrepancy?

To be honest, are you absolutely SURE you read it right on the first visit?

No, that's the thing, do I ring first or just dive in with a letter... not a nasty one, just a factual one.

I'm not absolutely sure to the nearest mile, but when I get a figure in black and white on the warranty docs that match my memory of the mileage almost exactly, then it makes me think I was correct.

I'd ring if I was doing it, and explain what you saw, the fact that the warranty doc backs up your memory,BUT the car now has gained 3500 miles, along with the MOT cert.

Just ask them to explain what is going on. Is it the same car that you saw, or just the same model and colour???

...it was definately the same car, as I remembered the registration.

Perhaps a phone call to the young gentleman I dealt with initially presenting him with the facts?

Think you should put something like this in writing to the general manager of the branch with all documents etc, as 3500 miles in a week is big time

Have you thought about what you want eg refund, different car or whatever, as that's an extra tenth of mileage added on?

Also, anybody know if mileage/dates/times are stored in the cars ECU/elswhere or if diagnostics can reveal this info?

All I want initially is an explanation. As you say, this is no small beans, I could have lived with a hundred or so, but in six days that car shouldn't have left the showroon in my opinion, as servicing and the MOT took place on the premises.

I would definately right a nice letter to them explaining your concern's.

The only problem is you have now had the car a month, so it is gonna be a lot trickier to prove.

Is it possible it was 38600 miles, and you mistook it for 36600??

...I don't think so, but I guess it's possible.. even so that's an increase of 1000 miles

EDIT: and this would mean the information in the warranty docs is incorrect, as it listed 36'633 or thereabouts.
