No buddy you didnt dream it . Its just a courtesy light that illuminates the gearstick area
It is called indirect night lighting. A nice green glow on the gear stick. "good eh".
Pioneered by BMW I believe. If factory-fitted usually comes with auto-dipping rear-view mirror and rain-sensing windscreen wipers.
It's underneath the mirror - in the centre and shines downwards onto the gear lever area - it'a a sort of orangey light on my SRi - very relaxing
The light is in the bottom of the mirror housing, here are some photos I've just taken:

The mirrors were pioneered by a company called Gentex. They also make for the aftermarket. They did have a version with garage door opener transmitter built in on early Vectra's. I did try to order one for mine but it came out at £450.
