    Default service intervals

sorry if this has been posted before, but got home from work the other day and there was a letter from dealer saying my car is due for service (service every 2 years, not due till june 08), so rang them asking whats going on, they said that its been chainged for every year but im entiteld to just do it evey 2 if i want, i do it myself in the mean time every other year, is what they say right or are they pulling a fast one.

As yours is an 04 then it would have originally been every 20,000 miles/2 years max if on ECOFlex (which the car would have been on originally. Mileage to service shows when trip reset pressed with ignition off). The point at which the car indicates it needs a service will be determined by how you've been driving i.e. it could indicate after 15,000 miles if you'd been doing a lot of town driving etc.

If the car was changed to ECOService (often done by dealers when they got the car) then it was a straightforward 20,000/12 months.

On later years, can't recall the exact point, they reverted to just the straightforward 20,000/12 months (30,000 for diesels).

It's really down to how comfortable you are with the interval between services. My car is on ECOFlex so will tell me when it needs a service depending on how I've been driving - max period being 20,000/2 years. I'm not comfortable with leaving oil in for that length of time so mine gets an interim oil/filter change between the scheduled services.

Well mines also a 2.2Sri 2006 and here's what the service book says about service intervals m8:

    1st (Interim) - 1yr or 20,000 miles since delivery
2nd (Main) - 1yr or 20,000 miles since previous service
3rd (Interim) - 1yr or 20,000 miles since previous service
4th (Main) - 1yr or 20,000 miles since previous service
5th (Interim) - 1yr or 20,000 miles since previous service

Mines due the 2nd service 1 month from now, so you can work out from that where you are. Hope that helps.

I go by the manufacturers written spec, ie ECUflex tells me when it's ready (up to 20,000 / 2 years).

Thats about 9-10 months interval for me. Mileage is almost the least important factor when deciding when the oil needs to be changed

Number of cold starts, driver habits, length of journey, oil quality, quantity of oil, age of engine etc etc are probably more important than simply how many miles total between services.

Ie, engines that do few cold starts, and enjoy long runs daily on motorways (at operating temps) will not need oil changing as frequently as the car that does many cold starts and only a few miles per journey. Water, sulphates, nitrates etc will build up in the oil, making drains more frequent (based on mileage covered anyway)

    Hope that makes sense.

Been looking for a full indepth report on it, but can't find it - it explains it more fully than what I just blurbed
