    Default Advice on Tyres

I'm shortly going to be needing new tyres for my Signum 3.0cdti(after 20k miles). Normally I get my tyres from Costco as I find them generally the cheapest and they also do a good job of balancing etc. They have quoted me £146 per tyre inclusive of fitting etc. They only fit Michillen. The tyre size is 215 * 50 R17 91W.
Can anyone tell me if there are any other possibilities for tyres / sizes / profiles? I would quite like a tyre which would give me a smoother ride than the current ones and produce less road noise.
    Any advice would be welome.
    Thanks
    Decho

dont think the tyre makes a differance to the road noise mate, sure if you want to reduce it you will be to get smaller wheels. £148 quid for a tyre is expensive too, just bought a new one for my 19"" snowflakes and only paid 120 quid, mind you i did not buy the best tyre available but hey who cares

They don't want to be fitting 91W on a 3.0CDTi - needs to be a higher load rating. Can't recall what the minimum is for 17" tyres. There are a couple of large threads on it if you do a search.

What load rating are your current tyres?, and are they the ones that came from the factory?

Should be at least 94's for the weight rating.

    Try www.mytyres.co.uk or www.tyretraders.co.uk or even www.camskill.co.uk

Oh, and bin the 215's in favour of 225 / 45 / 17's. Much more choice, much cheaper and recommended by Vauxhall themselves.

    Hope this helps

Just wondering people, what's the difference between summer and winter tyres. Do I change the 19's back to 17's in the winter? Thanks.

    No!

It's a description aimed at the baltic states... Not something I'd worry about.

Their winter tyres are studded and narrow to cut through snow.

I think 91 rating is the lowest you can go on the V6 Diesel. It ONLY JUST covers the weight limit, I think - 95% sure - You really want 95 or extra load rated ones. as said go for 225/45/17. Cheaper and look the same. A much bigger range to choose from. Stay away from cheap tyres and bridgestones if you like quiet tyres. Conti's are quiet but not cheap!

1165kg for the front axle weight on a 3.0cdti. 1165 / 2 = 582.5. A 91 rated tyre is rated at 615 KG, so it is close but even the 90 rated is 600kg so in theory these would be ok too.

Very interesting replies thanks. I am surprised that the loading is an issue here as I would assume that these were the tyres fitted when the car was new. I bought the car when it was 10 months ols with 11k miles and assuming it was on its first set of tyres. But I take you're point and as I tow a caravan probably having the higher load rating would be a better idea. Excuse the ignorance but If I go for this tyre will I need to have the speedo re-calibrated....and do I need to let my insurance company know?
    Cheers,

Insurance, No, it's a recommended tyre size, have a look in the Vehicle Handbook and you'll see the pressures.

Extra load on the 3.0 Diesel, is required. The weight rating on the 17" tyres needs to be 94.

Speedo calibration, you can if you want, but it's not really an issue.

The XL isn't a requirement but I would recommend it. Look at my post above the 91's are very close - too close really but are still within the weight limits.... but only just. The tyre would generally be stronger. The tyres I have now are XL rated 225/45/17's. The speedo really isn't worth worrying about.

edit: I'm being a bit padantic here, Go with at least 95's
